Did you go through the gate to see how many positions the stick goes to?

Yes they make a 5-speed HD trans, and a 6-speed too, and a 6+1 or 7-speed HD trans.

OLDSKOOLERnWV and Scooter HBG Thank this.

Yep, Detroit Don't know if it's original, still investigating. Not enough time yesterday for in depth look-see. It may not be 11.1, but that's what the service writer told me. Trying to get back out today to take pictures. Just like the existing tranny might not be original.

Yes, six position, which is why I thought it could be a 5 speed but really need to get a real mechanic out there with me, otherwise I'm just guessing.

A pic from underneath and we could probably tell you. The 11.1's lasted until 99 IIRC.

    Scooter HBG Thanks this.

That 6+1 in the medium duty range that International used had a common problem caused by operator error. Every one I took apart for jumping out of gear had the shift rails inside bent, drivers just couldn’t seem to let the rpm’s drop far enough without trying to crowd them in to the next gear. New shift rods with new wear bushings and it was back to normal….

Scooter HBG and Opus Thank this.

Problem with the gear slots theory is a 9,13,18 and a 6 speed all have 6 slots. There were three older 5 and 6 speeds that had reverse in 3 different spots. Upper left toward dash like normal 9, 13, and18’s. Lower left toward driver seat or lower right toward passenger seat. On those you always had to pull the stick out and away from the gate to engage reverse.

Crawl under the truck, find the numbers stamped on the side of the transmission. IIRC a Road Ranger the numbers are on the passenger side of the trans housing. Copy the numbers exactly as they are, report back here, somebody will tell the exact model, and shift pattern.
