The Ex had a mental problem (has). But my point is that
the women I have experiance with tend to have a hard
time visualising the future. She may say it will be fine if
she only sees you one or to weekends a month but when
you leave her alone she will realize she is not married
and some other guy will show up that will be there
when she needs him. If you do go OTR and want to
keep her makes sure you both have cell phones on the
same network and you talk an hour every night.

yeah it's a hard decision...reading more about the lifestyle, low pay vs. mileage, unpaid "dead head", influx of foreign work visa drivers (some i've seen while working for a greenhouse/nursery this summer), trainers racking up miles at my expense, so really having cold feet about moving forward...
can others shed some more light on this or am i summing it up well? -
Most of the time they are just begging for money. Rarely did I have any one approach me offering things for sale, but it did happen.
Most of the time when some one said they were hungry and wanted money for food, I would offer to BUY them some thing. MOST of the time they had one excuse or the next as to why they didn't have time to go inside the truck stop.
One guy I'll always remember.. He came up to me at the fuel island in Lake Station IN at the J. Normally I did not stop at that truck stop. Usually I stopped at the Gary J.
Any way this guy came up and wanted money for food. I told him to just hang out and I would buy him some thing to eat when I got done fueling and got a cash advance. He stuck to me like glue.
I bought him a hot deli sandwich, a big mess of tater wedges with ranch dressing and a frequent fueler drink.
He was so happy, probably happier than if I would have given him a $100 bill. I'll always remember how grateful he was over a $5 meal. -
Question - You keep skirting around the girlfriend thing, why? I'm the wife of a trucker - happily and 100% behind him. Even if this girl is a "special" girlfriend, you need to keep her feelings and understand what these people are trying to tell you. Being at home isn't easy either - we learn to do it all, some aren't cut out for it and the marriage is in the toilet fast, others are together and stronger than ever. You keep talking about how YOU feel, you've been asked a couple times about her and haven't even mentioned anything - when your in a relationship of any kind and one of you is a trucker, you better beable to put that other persons feelings into play too, or your doomed from the beginning. But, if she isn't that important to you, then by all means just ignore everything I just said.

ok...g/f is supportive of me doing anything that makes a decent wage although unsure about my being away...says we can work it out...i'm looking at trucking or teaching overseas, which would mean no more g/f.
glad to hear things work well for you with wife. true about being at home or around all the time is no cake walk, esp. in my case seeing a div. lady with kid(s) at home. being around too much in that scene has its own stress. in this way otr for a year's probably a good thing. -
I am the wife, roadhog is my hubby's handle, and I had a child when I met him.....personally I think OTR is a good choice for you, she can find someone who deserves her and her kids.

There is no room in trucking for excuses or the weak. Either you'll have the self confidence to get into the profession or you'll stay home. Trucking is something that takes special people that work in stressful situations everyday. It's listed as one of the top five most dangerous professions. It has one of the highest divorce rates. After 27 years as a LTD I think that anyone considering trucking as a career should give it serious thought and talk it over with their family and friends. Do your homework on any company that you are considering. Some states have programs that will help pay for truck driving school. Depending on you circumstances, they might even pay for the entire course.
Trucking is not for the faint of heart it does not matter whether you are a male or female. It's a tough, thankless, unforgiving profession to get into. Many folks get into it and can't make it because they didn't fully understand what being a OTR trucker really is and what the job demands.
You'll be away from home, miss the majority of important of family events.
You'll learn who your real friends are the ones that aren't will disappear because you are never there to be a friend. It can ruin relationships faster than anything I know.
You'll learn the true meaning of being alone and lonely.
You'll ruin your health if your not careful and sometimes will anyway no matter what you do to take care of yourself..
You'll learn that it's the one of the only jobs you can have that can take everything you have including your freedom.
You'll have to account for every moment of every day as long as you are a driver.
You'll go to places that no one in their right mind would even consider going unless they had a gun to their head.
You'll learn the meaning of covering all the bases and planning.
You'll learn the meaning of discrimination because truck drivers are all branded by an uninformed, uncaring public and a few bad apples.
You'll learn that you can't trust anyone that you come into contact with out on the road, at a dock, on the company yard or in a truck stop.
You'll learn that the majority of companies and people you come into contact with don't care about you or your problems.
You'll learn that when you count all the hours that you're out on the road that you barely make minimum wage.
You'll learn that if your sick or hurt that no one is going to bring you soup or check on you.
You'll give up all aspects of a regular life.
All that for a seat in a truck.
What do you get back I'm sure you're wondering by now.
You'll see some of the most beautiful places in the world.
You'll see sunsets and sunrises that are beyond description.
You'll see things that you've only read or dreamed about.
You'll do things that you never thought you could do.
You'll do things that you never thought you would do.
You'll learn to be happy when you're alone.
You'll meet people that will leave a lasting impression on you.
You'll see things that will make you feel sad, happy, afraid, angry, and humble.
You'll learn to love where ever you live and the people in your life.
You'll learn to be independent, patient, and proud.
You will learn to pray.
You will grow up.
All that for a seat in a truck.
No one can make the decision but you. We can give you advice, support and try to steer you in the right direction, in the end it's up to you.
