I Have a freightliner classic 1995 with detroit 12.7, it had a DDC III ecu, the ecu died so I buy an used one, but it dosnt have a plaque or piece of paper that say if its a ddc III or IV. When i start the truck it runs fine, but on the first trip, it make and engine failure, but just for like 2 second and also pulls smoke, then it get normal and runs fine, but does it all the time.
I conect my laptop and it say oil temp sensor and the turbo sensor, I delete it the turbo one, but the oil no because I have to change the sensor. I put a new turbo sensor and the problem continues and keep saying is the sensor.
Now the questions: How can I now if the ecu is a DDIII or IV? I get the ECU serial number with the laptop that is VF601434, but i dont know where to look if it is III or IV.

2- Does the turbo signal or sensor can cause that engine failure?

    Thanks!

Not sure, but I think VF ECM's are DDECIV.

Are you using DDDL or some other diagnostic program?

What software level does you program report the ECM as? DDECIII will be R9 or similar. DDECIV will be R20 or greater.
Did you just fit the ECM, or did you get it reprogrammed to your engine number?
Did you set the injector codes?
Exactly what fault codes are you getting? Flash code, PID, SID, FMI etc.

If you send me your engine serial number and the engine number that the new ECM is programmed to, I can check to see if they are compatible.

ddec 3 and 4 will run your engine but the boost sensors are different.so you will have a boost sensor code if you put a ddec 4 ecm on a ddec 3 . with a boost code you may not get any fuel as it stays in smoke control till it sees 5 psi boost.if you have dddl on your laptop look at engine configuration data in diagnostics drop down to see what your ecm is programmed to

also oil temp, code will cause shut down .try unplugging it as it will change the code to a sensor fault and not shut it down, or change the shut down calibration to warning with your laptop
