The service brake is the pedal on the floor that applies pressure to all 10 brakes.
If I am wrong, some please let me know. The trailer brake it the lever valve on the dash and the service brake is the pedal on the floor.

So, an experienced professional driver knows when to FLOAT and when to DC. I am starting to understand that now.rank Thanks this.
-
LOL, sarcasm I'm sure but I thanked you anyway because yes there is a time where it's helpful to DC. I float most of the time also, but IMO to say that professionals don't DC isn't quite correct.BROKENSPROKET Thanks this.
-
Neither one. If your at 100K climbing a steep hill best advise is not to shift till you get to the top of the grade, this is not a race. If your at 125K loaded with grain you are over loaded to start with and certainly not floating. Both of these would absolutely be examples of using your clutch. You would never float in either situation.BROKENSPROKET Thanks this.

Couple of things, never worry about which is faster, you want to go fast buy a Susuki Hayabusa. Trucks are for pulling loads. Learn to shift correctly, the same exact timing is used DC or Floating. Learn to leave your engine brake off execpt while it is actually being used, screws up shifting more than anything else.
Take your time enjoy the ride and tell anyone urrying you to piss off.BROKENSPROKET and S.V.Buyck Thank this. -
I here ya there. That is the most frustrating thing. I am getting alot better at turning it off the moment it no longer aids me.
-
Nope, no sarcasm. This rookie has been driving for a year and I never had a trainer. I am learning alot of things the hard way. I quit DC'ing because the boss wants me to FLOAT. I abandoned it. The discussion in this thread had helped me see clearly in what situtions where DC'ing the better choice. The way you made your point by asking questions like that, Well, you didn't 'TELL ME', you made me tell myself. I appreciated that.rank Thanks this.

The clutch gives you a bigger window in which to execute the shift so you don't have to be perfect with the timing...you can hurry it a bit....that saves rpms and ground speed. By all means, float all day on the interstate with a few thousand in the box.
And 125,000 is not overloaded.

I don't want to mess up this thread but it contains a lot of misinformation on a Jacobs brake. So I am going to start an engine brake thread. From what I have read here I have been doing this very wrong for a very long time. It may take a short while to get it started but it should be very interesting and hopefully correctly informative.
