Basically it comes down to 16% for the carrier, 14% for the terminal, and 70% for me. That is if I am pulling one of the Terminal's trailers. Then I get all of the fuel surcharge (that seems to average around $0.25 per mile) and all of the toll reimbursement. Then I get a few extra fringe benefits such as free parking, the use of the shop and the wash bay. In return I do the Pa. State Safety Inspections for all of the Terminal Owner's trucks (he has about 10) for free. It's kind of a one hand washes the other kind of thing. It's really not a bad deal and it's only about a mile from my house.

Medman,
I was talking to you about trying with your company a FLAT RATE with a 35% FSC to the truck. That assures you the funds for the miles driven. When i've taken a PM rate to a new customer the number most always starts LOCAL here is $2.00 for a 100 mile run.
I've flat rated our runs LOCAL only at $300.00 to start and that's 1 mile to 100 miles!
No FSC on that rate their. When the customer exceeds $300.00 or 100 Miles he's getting hit with at least 35% FSC added to the rate ( NEGOTIABLE ).
All the best,
I would have jumped back into this earlyer but I found out my fathers not doing so well.
He's got a number of health issues and his Doctor gave him 3 months.. ..
All the best,
Matt -
Sorry to hear that Matt, He will be in our prayers. -
Thanks about the prayers....
Im going to get the REAL, deal from the doctor myself today.
My father, just doesnt LOOK or even THINK that he's going to pass in three
months? But you never know.....
He's got a ton of crap wrong with his lungs.....
COPD, BLACK Lung, and like 3 other things... Asbestosis, ect....
He's in BAD shape, but He himself ( thinks ) that he's going to get better.
He has a VERY strong will to live. I myself ( know in my heart ) that hes tired.
Absolutely not wanting him to leave me, but I to pray... and its god will be done ... not mine, Im not holding on to a man that is ready.....
Thank you all in advance for everything,
Matthews Family -
ya, sorry to hear that. Been dealing with that myself lately. Old man's been in the hosp on a resperator three times in the last year or so. Last time he was on it or weks because he crashed every time they tried to take him off.
He actually quit smoking now or at least he says he did) so who knows. mabey he will turn around.
How about Detention time guys? Do you guys have it in your contract? I know from experience with these medical scanners we get dispatched out to pick them up and it never fails, when I'm almost there the hospital decides to extend for a few days r a week and I end up sitting so I want to make sure my contract has detention time in it.
What do you guys charge? What do YOUR daily cost run just for sitting? I know these days you can get a hotel room for cheaper than idleing a truck for 24 hours. DO you just charge enough to cover costs or do you charge enough for some "ME" money -
First time post. Thought i might give my little guide on rates.
First get fuel price at pick-up state and delivery state.
This is where i get my avg fuel set rate. 2.40 per gal = 2.40 per mile
This is a fair price and works for me. Doing this takes alot out of the guess work. Let the market set your rate. Now work with the market. Sound crazy. It works for me. Put a cal to it and see. I dont even worry about fuel surcharge. My customer dont freak out either. well not all of them.
Let me know what you think. -
Update on that fuel surcharge thing. With the prices of fuel going up we are at about 36 cents a mile in FSC now.

We charge by the hour so if the truck is out it's getting paid the same money whether it is rolling or sitting. With all my short runs if a customer can't take delivery when I get there and it is going to be a long time (like a day) usually I will just take the load home and deliver it the next day or whenever. There have been times when a customer has had problems and has had me wait on site for long times (10 hours or better) and we just charged them the hourly rate the whole time. I loved it. Truck sitting still and making money, no wear and tear no fuel burned, same rate.
I think you have to make money on sitting. You have to remember the truck isn't available for other profitable work when it is tied up waiting on a customer to do something. And if you are talking about moving those medical trailers around you are going to be paying big money for cargo insurance.
To tell you the truth, there was a guy that I was talking to about moving them locally for. He was from Ohio but he had trailers in the southeastern Pa area. We were in the early stages of talking price and I threw out a number of $150 per hour, he didn't even blink.
The reason we didn't hook up was he didn't have enough moves to warrant me finding a way to get the 2 million in cargo I needed. -
Allthough my rate break down is like this and I do believe it's a good Carrier.

To break it down,
If you own your own TRAILER you pay no trailer rental/lease fee's. If you use their trailer you pay 6%. Also on top of the load you'll be paying a 2% escrow to help in fuel tax's when do.
All in all ( Besl's ) a pretty good company from what we can see. We are just having a pissing contest with one of their shuttle offices.
And it's all over the DEAD HEAD thing.
All the best,
Matthew
