Teach the DOT officers to give truckers some breaks once in a while,,,that would be a big help. BTW, thank you for your service to this once great Country....

[SUP]Sheep dog, everyday I hit the road I try to give the benefit of the doubt. I have several non negotiables going 15 over the speed limit, 15 under the speed limit, traveling in the passing lane, improper lane change, and messing with an electronic device. I even give people the ability to explain themselves. Each day (as an assistant post commander) I tell my men to approach situations in the same way![/SUP]

Every LEO inertaction is a unique experience. And by and large, in my opinion, LEOs are professional in how they conduct their duties. Yes, you will have a few bad apples but they are more the exception.
But sadly, most of the general public's interaction with LEOs is perceived negatively because they receive a citation and refuse to accept that they actually did wrong.
The advice my company gives when dealing with LEOs is respect, respect, respect. And in my opinion, it is the driver that sets the tone of the interaction and the LEO reacts to that.
If your men are professional going to into the interaction, then I have no further insight. -
Ebola guy, the GSP is becoming more and more professional. I encourage younger officers to treat every encounter as it's own. Most of the best LEOs understand this, but occasionally you have a clueless rookie!

Based on what I've seen posted by you, it appears you are in traffic enforcement versus motor carrier division. So I won't give you a lengthy rant about how GSP (doesn't, as a rule) properly exploit the Prepass program, nor will I mention the traffic/ramp control at the I-75 SB scale at Ringgold.
If you really want to make the roads safer, start looking at careless/distracted driving by 4-wheelers. If our state legislature is going to put laws on the books about texting and leaving space when passing, how about a little enforcement on that. 90% of the time a 4-wheeler encroaches on me, there's a cell phone in their hands or on the side of their head. It's a much bigger problem than another big truck blowing by me at 80 mph.
The impression I have is that GSP sees big trucks as a cash cow. When I start seeing more emphasis on road safety than getting my empty prepass equipped truck to roll through a scale to check if the mudflaps are black enough, my attitude will change for the better.codyschmidt and SheepDog Thank this. -
I gave my opinion in your other post about speeding trucks doing 15 over.....and that opinion was formed from all states LEO's not just GA..How can a LEO enforce something that they feel they are above?...speed limit. Lately I have seen many LEO's speeding under normal circumstances , no blue lights or not on a call, just going down the interstate.
Today..It is all about the revenue. It used to be on a Federal Interstate--only State Patrol would be sitting in the middle with radar. Today the local city cop sits in the middle trying to generate revenue for the city you are passing through..Ah I don't remember the interstate running through city streets so why is the local there?
Back in the day, a vehicle trying to pass another would need to go faster than the posted speed limit to get around the vehicle it was passing and LEO would understand that, but Today it is all about the revenue and if you are doing 5,8mph or whatever over to pass a vehicle and you pass LEO in the middle, the blue lights come on and the chase for revenue is done.
Set an example as a professional and it will be noticed, Be human when you do stop somebody, and if you can give them a talking to and let them on their way without revenue , it will have taught them a lesson that they will remember.
Truck drivers are the only drivers that get awarded points for all the bad that they do..and after so many points that the truck driver is awarded from each offense, He will be unemployed if the number gets to high (3 points in the first year for every violation) example Like a burned out light 5 points X 3 = 15 points
A verbal warning with no paper trail , no csa score violation, no psp score violation, will be forever remember from that truck driver because like you, He is human. -
Well Red, your right I'm mostly in traffic, although when I was first hired 20 some odd years ago I was a Motor Carrier Compliance officer . I don't know if your familiar with this, but in a recent legislative session we have a new law banning messing on your phone while driving, this includes texting, tweeting, posting, emailing, and even searching directions. ( you can however still talk, but that is the only function you can still do) I mostly try and stop these people. Whenever I do stop a trucker I usually don't get any excuses and generally give them a break. But when I stop a four wheeler I get 50 million lies at once about how their wife is having a baby, they are late for work, they need to go to the "potty"(actually had a sorority girl who thought this was valid excuse for going 50 in a school zone). I have heard a lot of complaints about prepass though, and it really bothers me.

Cody, I really try to give truckers breaks, but sometimes they( especially small operations) can be scary. Just a few weeks ago I caught a log truck going 80 in a 60, while he was nearly 10,000 lbs overweight. I treat all violators, wether they are professional or daily drivers as a threat to publics safety. All the same I would much rather stop a cherry red sports car going 80 in a 60 than a truck. I also avoid speeding unless in route to a call or trying to make a traffic stop. I also generally give allowances of about 15 mph over the limit if traveling, and about 20 mph in passing.

Bingo! Simply setting the example and following the simple laws that WE as tax payers pay them to uphold would go a long way in my views of them. Seems there are many in my area that like to flaunt there status in the way they drive and operate everyday and constant use of cell phones while driving. Not sure if this is a newbie thing or what but it does not help there overall opinion in the eye of the general public.GSP ATH Thanks this.
