Why do you think you could get into "tighter" spaces ? It's strictly for fuel mileage. If your mainly otr it should be fine. USF Holland has run that setup for years.

Hate to hear about good companies that take a nose dive after the good people that started it retire or pass on and then people take over that have no concept of hard work or respect for drivers, let alone common business sense and experience in the business. Hope you find something sdtransporter.

Do these single-axles have a tighter turning radius than their tandems?
They do at my company.
You're right though, that does help with fuel mileage. -
I didn't say our trucks have single drive axles. They are just like any other 3 axle tractor but without the ability to lock in the second axle. About the same wheel base and it has NOTHING to do with steering ratio. Sure, you might squeeze an extra .25 miles to gallon out of it IF you're a flatlander.

Does the dummy axle lift up?

getting rid of the second pumpkin drive line and all the gears will lighten the truck by about 600 or so pounds. then you also have less gears to turn so, yea you will get better fuel milage. that should make you happy if you get a fuel bonus. there are several companys that have gotten away from twin screws and a lot of those are using super singles so you have lost another 400 pounds there. so you have lost a total of 1000 pounds that means you can haul a 1000 pounds more freight. You wont even know that you aren't running a twin screw once you get used to it and a just your driving accordingly.

we run super singles too. You will notice the single screw config the first time you get stuck in a dip or since the cascadias don't have dump valves and our KW's do, someone dumps their bags when dropping that load of beer in a dirt lot and you come along in single screw and try to get under it. Yeah, you will miss it. Further, the new trucks have the Detroit D12 engine, supposedly the most fuel efficient on the market with a manufacturers Est. 9mph. Not a single truck has close to that. Particularly when our shop comes along and turns the ECM down to 62 on the foot, 65 on cruise.
The fact of the matter is, top gear, consistant speed, letting it pull down to 1000rpm before down shifting and progressive shifting, will get you better fuel mileage. I was getting 7.8 mph in a T660 450 ISX Cummins running CA. To St. Louis. Our flatlanders arent even getting 7 with all this new technology because the company dossnt see that hiring drivers that know what they are doinv is more effective. I'm in an older Cascadia without the D12 and am getting better fuel mileage than our teams with the new config.
I pulled my truck in to a FL dealer and kicked the mechanic some cash to turn it back up to manufacturer specs. Guess what? Now I'm in line to get close to 8mph. Of course, Henderson finds ANY reason to disqualify you that bonus. Even if someone calls in to complain about somethjng. That disqualifies you. Even if someone didn't call in, they can claim someone did. How are you going to know?
Henderson sacrifices driver capability for perceived fuel mileage.
