Not sure if this shouldn't be posted in the medical section, but this forum did say for NEWBIES, so I figured I'd try it here. Mods, if this is the wrong place to post this, please delete the thread and I'll post it in the medical section. Many thanks.

That said, I have been recently diagnosed with hepatitis b, likely obtained from a tattoo. I'm 21 years old and It appears I've had the virus for around 5 years now.I'm just curious if this will hold me back and keep me from following my dreams of driving the big rigs? Aside from this, I'm in perfect psychical shape and shouldn't have any other problems.

I've been wanting to drive a truck since the 1st time I saw Over the Top as a kid, well that, and I love to travel.

Does anyone know if hepatitis b is a CDL disqualification or if a trucking company will avoid me due to this? I have a clean driving record, background is clean so I've not been involved with drugs or any other nonsense. I've kept myself out of trouble for the most part except for my tattoos, and they are on my upper arms and are easily hidden. If it is a probelm , is there any type of medical waiver that could be obtained?

Thanks in advanced for any help and I greatly appreciate it. I really hope I haven't flushed my dreams down the toilet due to a pointless tattoo.

HBV is not a disqualifying medical condition.

I'd love to see a link as well but I've googled for hours and can't find nothing on it, aside from a few reports of drivers already contracting hep. while on the road, so thats a bit different.

I do hope windsmith is right.

Try calling your local clinic that does DOT certifications and ask them. It will be the easiest way.

Clueless as to who my local clinic that does DOT certs. I just recently got diagnosed and still ashamed of it. I don't think i could bring myself to call at the moment to be honest, hence why I've asked here. I suppose its something I have to come to terms with. Thanks for the reply tho.

Hopefully someone here can reinforce what windsmith said or can offer me some more information on this if there is waivers and what not if it is going to be a problem.

I read the link you posted and noted no mention of liver probelms but it appears the only disqualifications are those that would limit/hurt your driving ability, so I meet the physical qualifications from what I can tell.

Hepatitis is bit of a vauge subject when it comes to CDL and truck driving as far as online research goes, but I can't find any mention of it being a disqualifier and found numerous articles about drivers already having it. I'm just trying to get answers before I waste time trying to pursue my dreams only to be in for a major let down.

The way I'm taking it is if I meet the physical, I should be fine? Or am I off base here? I also found this under the medical section:

So I take it the ONLY way hepatitis would prevent me from driving a truck is if it would interfere with the control and operation of the truck?

I am feeling a bit better about it, though. Thanks a LOT! :biggrin_25514:
