The Dot guy is wrong if the stops are in the same city...
*"Question 6:"#*How should multiple short stops in a town or city be recorded on a record of duty status?
"Guidance:"#All stops made in any one city, town, village or municipality may be computed as one. In such cases the sum of all stops should be shown on a continuous line as on-duty (not driving). The aggregate driving time between such stops should be entered on the record of duty status immediately following the on-duty (not driving) entry. The name of the city, town, village, or municipality, followed by the State abbreviation where all the stops took place, must appear in the remarks section of the record of duty status.

both dot and safety are wrong.
8 hour shifts. home every night. you don't need a log book and dot should know that.
i got asked once. and i flat out told him i'm local.
driving a dump truck was a dumb question for him to ask anyways.
and i'm guessing you don't drive an OTR truck. i'm guessing you guys are being harrased because your on there radar for safety violations.
i've worked for 2 companies high on the list. but the only one that looks at me is the highway patrol. about once every 4 months.cowboy_tech and RickG Thank this. -
All the other posts being said Do you cross the state line because if you do I think you have to log that.

Some major truth in this. But you need to be careful here. If you load in Cambridge, 50 miles north, and deliver in Munster, 50 miles south, they can be 100 miles apart if you start in Devline and it's smack in the middle of both. They also call out specific communities like Chicago, Minneapolis, and other major metro areas that this applies to. I have used it in NW Montana around Kalispell and when the DOT pulls up the map and the two towns are 5 miles apart, they let it slide. (a DOT cop using their brain there)
Now your safety guys need to realize that THEY are the ones that are killing the company. You all have log violations that are also going to hurt you on a personal level. Just remember, no safety dept overrules the laws. If you can show and have the first hand knowledge that DOT is correct, then follow the DOT. If they "fire you" for complying with the law, you will have recourse. -

I drive a day cab, he ASSUMED I drove further then I actually did, till I told him how far I went,
he asked if I used paper or elogs, told him paper, again cause I know I need to the vehicle report.
you guys can see why I said I was siding with dot. -
Yeeah if you stay under 100 miles and keep a log sheet of all your drops breakdowns etc, work less th an 12, AND have a time card accurately noting all hours worked you don't need a log book
