Glad to have you with us Chris! I've been a wannabe on this forum since Oct 09. I think being a member of this board should be a requirement before a CDL is issued. Too many aspiring drivers get the "come to Jesus" talk after they've spent money and time getting into a career that simply is not one they have the aptitude for. I may find that to be the case for me but I won't go into it with blinders on. You've found this site and have the opportunity to take the blinders off. Good deal and good luck!

Hi and welcome! So nice to have you here! My brother in law is driving for Schnieder now...been there about a month, but he's an owner operator...so far so good for him.

Thanks. Yeah Schneider is on my short list. They are always on the Top 100 list of veterans employment, along with Werner, JB Hunt, and 1 or 2 others. Hearing the horror stories on here and even on youtube has steered me away from JBH and Werner. I'll be contacting SNI soon to see if they are running any classes lately.

    Have you considered Con Way?
I saw an interview with the big wig at Con Way and he pointed out
the support that company has for veterans, --- how they like to
hire them and even keep the jobs open for reservists called to duty.
Some of them more than once. Con Way claims to even help support
    the reservist's families while deployed.
Sounds like a pretty stand-up company, support wise.
Let us know what you find out?

BTW, Schneider is 100% family owned, --- not traded on the stock market.
How many Big truck truckin' companies can make that claim?

I just sent emails to the recruiters at Con Way and SNI and sent in an application at Millis. I looked back over the Top 100 list and yes, Con Way was on there and has an apprenticeship program for vets, I assume pretty similar to what SNI has. Thanks for the help everyone. Keep it coming!

Well, I just found out I can't get into the college I wanted to get into unless I do another semester of community college, which isn't going to happen anytime soon. So, the full-on job search is on. Con Way apparently is only hiring spouse team drivers right now so that's a no-go. Waiting to hear back from Schneider, I may just call them tomorrow. I applied at Roehle last night and I'm thinking about applying for Werner tonight.

Hey Chris, I think the folks here have recommended some good carriers to you. I've looked at each of them myself. I'm about to have to make a solid, final decision about which carrier I will go with, and, although I get knocked around a little about my obsession with safety and CSA 2010, I believe it's ludicrous for a new driver to add one more hurdle to a hurdle-littered career pathway. That said, please look at the safety side of any carrier you apply to. Even if CSA 2010 is rolled-out later than expected, I still feel like it makes sense to go with a carrier who puts safety (for drivers, citizens, families) in the spotlight. Good luck to you! You've got your head screwed on tight....keep it that way!

Thanks again for the help folks

Yessir, I've had safety pounded into my head for the past 6 years and some change. Being in combat arms and having one of the most dangerous jobs around, they really do their best to make us safe so we don't live through a year of combat at a time to come home and get killed doing something stupid. I definitely want to get good training to make sure I'm at my best rather than just find a company who will send me to school and put me on the road ASAP.
