nobody to deliver the load on time... Also refer companies hate loaded dropped trailers. Nobody around if the refer malfunctions or quits... then they have a whole load of junk.

I guess maybe, but you'd think a company with 400 drivers with two terminals not very far from delivery, there should have been something they could have done.

I would have to agree about possible malfunction, but then why do drop and hooks? Same thing could happen at any shipper before even being picked up.

I've done some reefer runs but all live loads/unloads.

Only the folks at Heyl know for sure. From all I know about them, you'll be rewarded with some good miles for taking the hit this weekend.

I felt the same way you do when switching from a good thing. Any little thing that goes wrong just really irritates you. It's taken me about 6 months to completely get settled into the change.

Nice to see me two favorite otr drivers at the same company, I liked Heyl, just couldn't do the 2 week deal. Finally got my dream local gig in Oct.....well its regional but warehouse is 10 minutes from the house. Running Organic produce for Global Organics. 12 drops, run to Savannah, Columbia, Hickory,Greenville then p/u a backhaul at Carrelton, frozen cakes for Publix and run it down to Lakeland. Leave Wed morning and usually at home before noon Sat. Have to touch all the freight but for 45 hrs of work it pays well and great home time

most refer companies drop an empty and pick up a loaded trailer... until the driver picks up the load and signs for it at the shack, it is the shippers responsibility if the refer quits.

XL, refer is always up and down, too much time on a load, or run like a scalded cat to make on time delivery, and pray for no delays. An extra day on a load used to be no problem, as it allowed a driver to get a reset in, for the next load... the new law mucked that all up.

I am 2 months in and it has been quite consistent for there to be approximately a 34 on each load if you run hard like I am accustomed to do. Doesn't seem to matter if it is a 1000, 2000, or 3000 mile load. Fortunately, I have had two long loads which help mitigate some what and two San Antonio to Florida loads that I was allowed to drop at Zephyrhills. This appears to be a gig much more suited to the recap folks that do 400 mile days. I have always had an ambitious nature so obviously I am struggling with this. There are plenty of other qualities to Reefer that are significantly different to dry van as well both good and bad. Overall I am not sure that this will work out for me. If it turns out to be a 10k-10.5k per month gig I will have to go back to dry van where I was able to consistently do 11k-11.5k. I am not yet seeing that as possible the way these loads are scheduled.

Vmaggs, I guess you didn't do North Dakota. All this time I thought you were freezing your bawls off and you were working on your tan. Congrats on the gig you found.

I said I would crunch #s/evaluate this trip and I will recap first. 1st load (Z-hills, Fl - Auburndale, Fl - Grandview, Wa). Arrived at consignee area 29 hrs before delivery appt.
2nd load (Grandview, Wa - Kennewick, Wa - San Antonio, Tx). After mt from 1st load, this pickup appt was 27 hrs later but only 46 miles away. Arrived at consignee 34.5 hrs before delivery appt.
3rd load (San Antonio, TX - Z-hills, Fl) I was allowed to drop at Z-hills yard. Actual delivery location was Orlando, Fl another 50 hrs later.
4th load (Z-hills, Fl - Lake Wales, Fl - Auburn, Wa - Puyallup, Wa). 11 hr wait at shipper for what was supposed to be a drop and hook. Took 34 reset in Montana and was required to switch from the original Auburn load to the Puyallup load a team brought to me. I would have been able to on-time deliver the Auburn load. Had I rolled immediately after the Montana 34 reset I would have arrived an additional 34 hrs before Puyallup delivery appt.
5th load (Puyallup, Wa - Kennewick, Wa - Ankeny, Iowa). After previous mt call I had 21 hrs til pick up appt 228 miles away. Arrived at consignee area 39 hrs before delivery appt.

The #s based on knowing I will lose at least a half day tomorrow at Ankeny with cons 5 letter word beginning with S. I am factoring 26.5 days associated with these loads since starting the trip on 3/5/14. Paid miles are 11,009. 11,009 divided by 26.5 days equates to 415 paid miles per day. When I calculate 415 times the average days a month I normally give an employer (25.5) that equates to 10,582 per month based on this trip. Bare in mind that this trip included 2 Florida to Washington runs and I was allowed to drop a load that had an additional 50 hrs on it and maybe only 40 miles.
I am sure many trips would fair worse. I never posted the 1st trips #s due to all the mechanical issues. They were significantly worse and I did not want to carry that bias into this 2nd trip.

My conclusion is that my concerns are justified.

I made it through the winter, left in April last year......great money and awesome experience but between rent and flights back home every 6-8 weeks it just wasn't worth it. Im glad to see you made it to Heyl hope they work out for you. I did like the long runs but then again they would give you alot of time on a load at times,if you like running hard it can be frustrating. Glad to see Paul is there too. They called me a few weeks ago to see if I wantd the bradenton - deerfield run but turned it down, gonna stay put and see If I can reach 1yr anniversary........which for me is a milestone... lol

This may only be an OTR issue. I spoke to a Texas Regional driver that claimed he got 38,000 miles in the 1st quarter. Obviously, that has to be almost all drop and hook. Haven't really heard what kind of miles any of the other regional drivers may get.
