For last 15 years I've worked in construction operating and hauling heavy equipment. After 3 companies went under and left me unemployed I decided for a career change to trucking. I'm currently pulling tanks, average about 2,000 miles a week and home some nights and most weekends. I take home between $800 and $900 a week. I do enjoy this line of work but am missing heavy haul. Could some of you heavy haul guys give me some info on what you guys are making and how much home time your seeing? If I get back into HH can I make more hauling local or is it better OTR?

Can't speak for all of heavy haul, but typically OTR pays better. However I'm sure there are a FEW dedicated local jobs that could be equal to OTR pay.

Plus up to 5400 bonus every 6 months, based on what the truck grosses.

Do you guys own your trucks or company drivers? How long do yas stay out? When ya say HH how big are ya talking to make that kind of money and how long did it take you to get to that point? I have experience with hauling some big #### and a lot of it but all the companies I moved equipment with have gone out of business. My reasoning for getting out of construction in my area. If I made the swap to HH how long do yas think it would take to start making good money???

I'm company. I did a few months of legal flat bed loads. Then switched to a heavy haul company. I'm not always on a permit load. Still do some legal loads. Heaviest I've been is 160k. Loads up to 12 wide so far. Recently did a tow-away that was 74 feet long, 57 ft kingpin length, 11 wide. 70 000lbs. My company could get you home every couple weeks. I like to stay out 30 to 40 days. I'm paid per day so I make the same even when on reset.

Where are you basses out of? I live in southeast Tennessee. Do you take your truck home? I've gotta stay close to home for a while but am seriously thinking on hitting the road next year. If and when I do that I wanna have a solid plan and company to run with and maximize my income.

HH is a good trucking if you get used to it. I would have gone that route myself but in my time there was a bit too much wild oats going around for that.

Tanker is very good too. Ultimately you might have to decide what you are willing to put up with.

^What he said. A lot of people in this industry will tell you to find your niche. HH isn't for everyone, it's all based on your personal preferences.

I'm based out of Canada. Couple hrs outside of Toronto. I don't take the truck home.
