    Hi,

I'm about to go to school to get my CDL A. I have experience in expediting, though with that I used my own cargo van. I've always enjoyed the driving aspect of it. I had a tough time with the sitting in my van for X amount of days though. It was either that or drive empty to another area.

In expediting I wanted to be local as much as possible. The reason being living out of a cargo van isn't ideal. In a truck I could make my own meals, get a decent sleep, etc. I also had a business that when I got work it was great, but I didn't get a whole lot.

I realize I've got a ton to learn. I've got ideas of how I envision things. I also know I'll get out there and things will be different.

My favorite time expediting was when I had a Michigan/Toronto loop. It wasn't dedicated, but it was close enough. I basically went from Michigan to Toronto one day and back to Michigan the next. I did that enough that I got myself an apartment in Toronto rather than sitting in my van. Sometimes I'd get a run out and back the same day. Other times I might have to wait a day or 2. It wasn't the best paying gig, but I sure enjoyed it. Or at least I enjoyed it until the border patrol started getting out of hand. I don't recall ever doing anything wrong, but for whatever reason they seemed to enjoy giving me a difficult time. I wasn't alone in that. Other drivers went through similar hassles.

This time around I'm hoping to simply be on the road. I'd like to get rid of my apartment and simply be on the road. If I can get a decent running truck, a reasonable sleeper, and somehow be able to take a motorcycle with me so I don't have to move the truck to go to the store, this is what I'd like to do.

If that's not possible then maybe there's something out there where I can get a loop like I had with Michigan/Toronto. I'm open to other cities besides Toronto. I can only say that this time around I do not want to be local.

Eventually I'd like to own my own truck. That's a couple of years down the road (pun intended) though.

    Thanks for reading,
    Danny

Since you plan to basically live in the truck, pick a company that has APU's. With strict idling laws now in cities and states plus trucking company policies, that APU will make your life much more comfortable. Won't have to worry about running the batteries down either on your down time or layovers while using your TV, computer, etc. Several companies have APU's and also hire new CDL graduates.

Nice catch. I had figured an APU would have been a given. btw/ I've noticed some of your other posts. In another thread you gave a handy tip. I hadn't even considered applying when I started school. I had planned on either going with the placement the school had or waiting until I was done with school to apply. I really like the idea you had. I'll be doing that.
