Correct, you cannot put anything in the windshield or windows to either side of the driver (392.9(a)(3)). Most driveaway operations incorrectly put the marking placards in the side windows or just lay it on the dash in the windshield.

Also correct, in driveaway services you can place the markings at the rear of a single vehicle or at the rear of the last unit in combination, as long as the visibility requirements are met (contrasting color, name and USDOT number legible from 50 ft).

If you were putting your marking placard in the rear window on a driveaway, you would be one of the very few to do so. Thank you for being aware of the regulations and attempting to abide by them.

Thank you for the compliment. I always look forward to your direct and complete input in these forums, it is refreshing to have a good guy from your line of work that is also trying to help the average driver. It reminds me of the good old days when enforcement was truly secondary to actual safety and education.

As for putting the marking in the rear window, though legal I prefer to tape it to the first power unit doors, to reduce the scrutiny from lesser competent officers that may not be as knowledgeable as perhaps they should, you know better to not stand out and slide right on through than be technically correct but have to justify it every time.

Thanks again for your valuable contribution throughout these forums Scalemaster.
