Help me to understand why would one want to replace the thermostat and water pump if the air compressor was putting air into the coolant system?

volvo d12D engines if you have pressure in expansion tank is bad air compressor or bad injector cups

No sure how you conclude its a head gasket, its water your talking about right? if it was the head gasket you'd have oil leaking everywhere sometimes if a head gasket goes you'll hear a load bang. On way to reduce water pressure, as a quick fix is turn the radiator cap 180 degrees this lowers the water pressure and stops water leaking till you can get to some place to fix it properly.

depends on what part of the head gasket and how bad. You can get coolant into the cylinders, exhaust in the coolant, oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil..

Well it saves you some cash, time, and headache.
1-Due to the excessive pressure from the Compressor water pump seals gaskets and o rings get stressed and weakens the whole integrity of the water pump and it may not be too long b4 it fails and let's you down and couse you more problems.
It is my believe new water pump works better with new thermostat
Every thing I said is based on my own experience and I ain't no Mechanic and not a steering wheel holder.

Hardworker is correct. The excess pressure in the cooling system puts a hurting on the o rings, t-stat seals and water pump diaphragm. Your cooling system was made to hold no more than 18-20 psi safely. Remember your air compressor gets you up to 120 psi pretty quick when it's working correctly!

    Hardworker and KB3MMX Thank this.
