I'll wade in as it seems no one is directly answering the question without hedging. Probably because they don't want to get sniped by people. As a general rule, Vans pay the least. Reefers a bit more. Flats a bit more than that. Tanks a bit more than that.
Now, before anyone starts flaming me... there are a BILLION variables that make everything I just wrote completely not true. Like certain vans pay very well. Certain tanks don't pay anything. I used to get ridiculed by Flatbed drivers when I drove for Tyson because I only made 40 cents a mile. They would tell me "I wouldn't work for less than 50 cents a mile." Well, yeah.. But Mr. Flatbed was getting 2000-2500 miles a week. And I was getting 2800-3400 miles every single week pulling a reefer. Tanks pay better with less miles because of added things. But tanks usually require experience. And the oilfield thing is really sketchy. You might make out. You might get screwed. Lotta shady people move in when it's the wild west. And you forget about finding housing.
My advice to any new driver is to try and get on a dedicated account with a van or pull reefers. Reefers have miles. You never sit. Everyone needs food and it's going everywhere.
Just my two cents.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
You can look for the highest paying companies anywhere, but, do you have the quality they need? Tickets, Accidents, Incidents, Ect. You want one of the best companies, and you think you can make it, try UPS. But make sure your young enough, because it is going to be a long road. Some of the other high dollar companies will not accept any bad driving records. Do you have what it takes? Good Luck.

There's good pay in ALL divisions of trucking.
After 20 years as a business owner in many fields, the most valuable lesson I've learned is:
Do what you love and the money WILL follow. If you love running a van but hate tanks, you'll make more money running vans in the long run.
If your heart is somewhere else, or you dream of another profession but drive just for the money, you'll be poor until you follow your heart.

I completely agree. Patience and perseverance and doing what you love.
