I always turn the fan on at the bottom. The big hill on 80 coming out of jersey up to 380 if i turn the fan on it'll top the hill at about 190 with a full load. 200ish if I let the fan come on by itself

Higher RPM's will keep coolant temp and EGT'S lower. I hit them wound up, and stay that way. The closer you are to peak torque, you'll use more fuel, at higher EGT's and coolant temps.

My fan doesn't work. The only way I could keep from overheating was by keeping the RPMs up on the hills.

Try pulling highway 24 in BC. You'll be 3rd gear to the pin for about 10-15 minutes straight. No run at that hill will save you anything for fuel.

Funny, as that brought up a memory.

Way back in high school (early '70's) I was riding in a car in CA along I-5 somewhere between Weed and Redding.
We got pulled over and the driver got a ticket.

The problem was that he used every downgrade to get going as fast as he could so that he would not lose as much speed on the next upgrade.
He would hit 75-80 going down, with a 55 speed limit.
Speeding, failure to control speed and reckless driving.
That was back before CHP even used radar, because they simply didn't need it.

It was a fun trip with the Civil Air Patrol for a model rocket competition.
Full of outdoors and snow and dope getting us high as we were building our rockets all night.
(The dope you use in building rockets, like paint.)
Not to mention the Saturn V 3 stage rocket losing a stage and coming back down to embed itself a foot in the ground, or the V2 rocket turning sideways to slam into the school.

My Big Bertha rocket set a height record that year... 970 feet.
I did a special job with the nosecone and in shaping the tail fins.

I got a speeding ticket in the same area around 79, and that area is still a speed trap.

I also owned a few big Bertha's. My favorite model rocket. It's more fun when they're big and slow so you can watch them climb.

As far as climbing hills is concerned, I was taught to downshift until I found a gear where I could accelerate at WOT, then back out and hold it at peak HP.

What goes up must come down. But what if you can't go up?

i pull several short steep hills and 4 long ones just about every night. i get the same mpg (at the same weight) whether i hit them at 55 or 70. the long hills it doesn't matter, the truck has a maximum speed it'll go, usually achieved about half to 3/4 of the way up. also consider i'm in a gutless automatic day cab. i use manual mode shifting once i'm in the hills. the long ones will raise the coolant temp to 210-215, from 175ish.
