    Hello Everyone,

I am a 23 year old entrepreneur in the trucking industry. I wanted to get some insight on how a carrier can bring on owner-operators with their own authority. I have tried to find ways to set this up but I am unable to come across something concrete to help me. Maybe someone here can drop some light on this. Is it even possible? I have hired O-Os who ran under my authority.

Are you an actual brick & mortar place or do you operate from the local Starbucks Wifi?

Yes, they can run under yours but it would be not advantageous for your insurance to have them do that. You would be on the hook for everything..including OS&D due to driver stupidity.

After seeing some of your posts, Id recommend you work for a brokerage agent or established trucking company and learn the ropes.

Do you have motor carier authority? broker authority?

If you are a carrier, you can lease them on and the will be on your insurance when under dispatch [figure 99.9% of the time] and you pay their company [lease, truck reg, etc should all be in the same name] and they fill out an I-9 form with their tax number.

Using their authority to cover your freight [get it on their authorities insurance] is brokering and you need to be set up with the DOT to do that.

You legally can’t unless you control freight in both directions. Otherwise it’s a double broker situation. People still do it but it’s not how things are supposed to be. Brokerages such as my own would weed you out and black list.

You must sign the carrier under your authority and insurance to be legal.

This makes sense... Thank you! I appreciate that!
