Just found this thread....North Florida here and graduating in late September from a 320 hour school. Teaming with my hubby and sure haven't found many companies hiring (not even teams) out of Florida. Got a call from May the other day and was told they weren't hiring out of Florida. We did hear from Conway and were told everything looked good but contact them 2 weeks before I graduate. Hubby doesn't have alot of years OTR (many years drving local but....we all know only OTR counts for driving) so I will have to go out with a trainer for 3-4 weeks. Not excited about that but after all this work ya gotta do what ya gotta do right? How is everyones job searchin goin here in Florida?

You will HAVE to move (get an address in another state) to get a job. If not, you are SOL. Even drivers with years of experience are having a tough time in FL. You need an out of state CDL to have a prayer. Don't count on these companies telling you to call a couple of weeks before you graduate either...they LIE. You get your hopes up only for them to tell you to call back in a month or they aren't hiring at this time. You can take your home time in FL and still "live" somewhere else.

How do I go about "moving"? If anybody else has done this I would love to know. I stay in North Florida but it might as well be South Florida the way things are right now. I love Florida, I just hate the way it is for truckers.

You can find a relative in GA (since you are in N. FL) and use their address. If you don't have any, you can find a short term rental (1-2 months), get that lease and get a GA DL. You only have to have a GA CDL (or whatever state) and address to get in the door. It's what I had to do.

First, let me apologize to everyone trying to get in contact with me over the last week or so, my private messenger is fixed so you can get me now.

Well, I'm just waiting to hear back today from Wil-Trans, the only company who'd give a Florida newbie a chance! They will let me know when my bus ticket is coming this week and who to meet with Monday the 31ST.

I've had some people (other Drivers) tell me not to go over the road, or not to do teams, not to commit for 15 months, and even though I've heard nothing bad yet about Wil-Trans, don't work for a refer company. Others have even complained about spending your first 60,000 miles with a trainer, that they would never do that, personally I welcome the experience. All I have to say is this. Are you hiring me, a newbie with no driving exp.? Are one of your friends or boss gonna put me behind the wheel? No? Why not? Oh that's right, I live in Central Florida and no companies will touch me with a ten-foot pole!!! Hey, keep your diluted opinions to yourself. If the only way to break into a trucking career for us Floridians is to commit to a 15 month contract, that you may turn your nose up to, then I say run me!!! I've been sitting home since July 3RD, applying and calling just about every company in the country. Let's see one of you do that for that long, with no end in sight, and see if you don't jump at this opportunity. I'm sure after this gets posted I'll get a bunch of private messages wanting to know how to get in contact with them too!

After the 1 week I have to spend on the Wil-Trans training grounds, you can kiss my taillights and suck on my exhaust!!! I'll be on the road with ya, or without you, if you still think your to good for a company like this! All you newbies, and/or wannabes, keep chasing the dream, do your homework on schools, companies, location (terminals or drop offs), ask questions (all lot!), read many, many post, and you'll be there. Good Luck, and Thanks for reading.

In January I am moving to Missouri after I graduate roadmaster truckdriving school like I said i bunch of times. I talked to recruiters who said FL is DEAD. All of them said hometime was where you wanted to take it. By All, I mean Swift, Stevens, FFE, Roehl, Covenant, Cr england, Werner.

Hey, I understand. I had to go to great lengths to get a job too and spend lots of $$ doing it. There will always be the nay-sayers but until they have been in your position, they don't really know. I've been there and you take what you can get. If it's 15 months...so what? that's nothing in a lifetime...I can do anything for 15 months. Then you will have that year of experience and be able to go to greener pastures. Good luck to you!

    Chauncestanbul Thanks this.
