NO SWERVING! Always keep an eye on traffic in front of you, they will alert you to something that you need to be aware of. Depending on traffic around you, if you can scoot over enough to miss the object, then do so. If you are surrounded by traffic, do your best. Better to be out $800 than trying to explain why you hit somebody, ran them off the road, or rolled the truck. And if you are going to try to tell your boss that you were trying to swerve to miss something, you may as well just say goodbye.
I've hit stuff many things, because traffic dictated I could not avoid something. And, I've been hit by flying objects, because I could not move over due to traffic. Take the hit, and chalk it up to lesson learned.
I'd say you did the right thing, at the time.

First day on the job, you don't waste any time.:biggrin_25525:

Doesn't sound like there is much you could have done. I try to keep more open space in front than most and I do my best to not have anyone right beside me but no matter what you do there will be things you can't avoid.

I had a similar situation with a 12' aluminum ladder not long after I started. I was able to avoid it by using a bit of the next lane and straddling it. Other times I haven't been able to avoid things but haven't had any damage.

Never swerve is a pretty stupid motto if you ask me, just make #### sure that if you do, it's safe to do so.

you did alright on that one. It's always a tough call and sometimes you think your going to miss something and you dont. You never know in this job. There is always something different. Hey and look at it this way could have been worse like 4 or more tires or a rollover or worse. you walked away even thought it cost you still have your health

Look at it this way....if you swerved to avoid it you its pretty hard to prove that it was there...so you did the right thing.

I was coming down US 59 in some construction, one lane only. It was night, a corner under an overpass, halfway thru the corner there sits an orange barrel in the middle of the lane. Needless to say, the barrel ended up in a land far, far away from the road.
