not necessarily a lousy company to work for , IF he gets fired.
they could have a ZERO tolerance for anything above a certain dollar amount, holding the drivers accountable as PROFESSIONALS.

Every driver has a folder with their name on the desk.
When little whoopsies, sins large and small enter that folder gets thick enough driver is called in office for a talking to and firing.
One time I hit the truckstop to get a meal out of the way 3 hours before a 40 mile run into Baltimore that was due at 7 am. I pulled out after meal at 4 am. One dispatcher noted my unit number and complained to his superiors who noted that little sin in my folder.
3 hours to run a 50 minute trip early and the bosses had a fit.
From that date forward I made sure to not be physically at the yard until it's one hour and 20 minutes before the truck needed to be in baltimore. 20 of those minutes will be bringing the water temp up
and paperwork.
Thats after I have had a hour meal before that at the truckstop.Ktanner683 Thanks this. -
Most decent companies will not fire you. Some won't even do any paperwork that will leave the office.
We have had drivers take off bumpers, bend bogies and still have a job. Yes, a few did have to contribute some $ to the repair bill, but never that much.
The 2nd expensive oopsie was not free however..G13Tomcat, Ktanner683 and x1Heavy Thank this. -
I think one of the most expensive damage wise accidents I committed with a semi and did not get fired was when I got trapped next to a Home Depot in Connecticut after a nursery delivery stop. Due to the manager failure to send out staffing to corral the flowing cars that have their way like a river.
I attempted a doughnut and the trailer overhang took about 24000 dollars in small trailer inventory over the bank, damaged another 15000 in chained inventory near those trailers. I think a nice little 40,000 loss to the store.
The manager was irate. And wouldnt you know it? he yelled at me for being stupid clumsy, his trucks turn around all the time there. (30 foot flatbeds on short day cabs) However the following day he sent 10 staffers out while we completed the rest of the nursery flower delivery. (Sunday)
I was not in a good tactical position with that tractor. I had two choices. Back down offset between a S row of badly parked employee cars at the far end or attempt a forward drive down the two rows to get out of the property. Company made no comment we rolled on routinely until the series of stops were completed. Which would be something else.Trucker61016 and Ktanner683 Thank this. -
Well yeah, if you hit something the size of a truckstop I’m sure the company would look down on it?

Honestly, I wouldn't sweat it.
You might get a dressing-down, lose a safety bonus or be made fun of by the guys in the shop, but that's probably about it. I can't tell you how many of my guys have bent bumpers, knocked off steps or banged mirrors over the years. If it's something that can be fixed in-house, most companies don't make *too* much of a fuss.Ktanner683 and flood Thank this.
