every where I have worked, it is grab the wheel with both hands, step on the throttle, which forces the nose of the truck up, and hit the animal. Stay on the road, find a safe place to pull over and check for damage. I have hit 5 deer in 3 separate occasions. First words from safety when I called in were always, are you okay, what is the damage to the truck, and the location...
Last incident, pulling a loaded crude oil tanker, had just at the pavement after midnight, and stepping up the pace... gross weight, 110,000. Had a buck run across the rise ahead, followed by a whole heard of does... okay high alert, 2 lane road, top the rise, see them all running along the edge, and then they decided at the bottom of the draw to cross the road again... I am not going to hit the breaks going down hill, I lifted off the throttle, and waited, as I coasted closer with the jakes on, when I saw a doe and here 2 fawns pop up and start across the road.... thump, thump thump.... the drives slipped, just steered for the middle of the road, and stepped on the throttle, straightened right up... damage to the turck, broke that stupid on guard radar in the bumper, and dented the bumper... had hide and blood all down the right side of the tanker....
Called in, are you okay... what about the truck, and the location... 2 miles back, the company would have had to pay for the value of the deer, but since it was on a state highway, no cost...Highway patrol asked if the road was clear, which it was, and said thanks for the report. Continue on with your night. -
The only deer I ever hit (crossing my fingers) was on Cochetopa Pass in Colorado about thirty years ago. I was driving a Mack and I aimed right for him. Only damage to the truck was it bent the grill in a couple of spots.
Got turned around to go back and see if there was anything salvageable, but alas nothing but a pile of hair and blood. Next day I spent about three hours washing the mess off the truck. -
The big thing around Flag is hitting elk on I-17 down around Munds Park.
