My husband has worked for equipment rental companies for about 10 years. He is home the majority of the time and these do not have the same slow down in the winter as a construction company. Most have decent pay, but son't expect the best just starting out. It's hourly with benifits. The hang up is you really need to learn how to run the equipment. My hubby lucked up on this becouse he worked for his grandfather's construction company as a teenager. It's hard for these companies to find a good driver who can also run the equipment. In the mid-south area where I live the big ones are RSC, NES, H&E, and United Rentals.
