I am OTR,.. but even I could theoretically run local and be home every night. I'd earn less than a company driver,.. but I'd still be calling my own shots.

Forgive me if this comes across as insulting,.. but how can you call yourself an O/O if you need a company to dictate how and where you run?

You should be able to decide where you want to go. I would never lease onto a carrier who would do forced dispatch on O/Os. I have my own numbers and I ran local for the first month or two because I wanted to test out and get used to my truck. Home almost every day. Pay was decent. But it was much more stressful when I'm trying to load, unload, and reload all in one day. I still managed to gross around 3-4k a week running local but only because I was on paper logs. I might've been home almost every night but I was more tired than I was OTR. Plus it's more wear and tear on the truck and driving in traffic 80% of the time sucks balls.

Now I do mostly 500+ mile trips and will only do a local trip day trip if it's over $1000.
