I own the truck. I hardly ever refuse to haul a load. Only demand I made when I started pulling for carrier I am with, is that the truck doesn't go west of I25, east of I79, or south of I40. Lots of freight moves in that area, and my living in the middle of Iowa, allows me to be home each weekend, and many times once or twice in the week.
I realize that new drivers have limited options early on. But if home time is critical, pay your dues and then get with a carrier that will keep you running in a particular area so that the loads you haul keep you within the area you need to be.
There are some carriers that, even though their drivers do 48 states, the loads are planned in such a way that the driver gets by home every 7-10 days. If a carrier has a good business model, they will plan things right so that not only is the customer served, but the drivers are not left out of the equation. Preplanning the next load long before the truck is done with the current load makes a big difference. Unfortunately, most of the mega carriers don't plan loads on a truck till the last minute, and usually the load will not match up to driver needs.
Hometime On Time...WHY IS THIS SO HARD???
