Well I have no idea what half of you all were talking about.. LOL so Ill just guess I dont really need the top gun Mods in a GL.. I do appreciate all your responces..

However Coal... The CB shop there in Dallas Pike that you are refering to, unless things have changed over the last year.. I wouldnt take my CB to him even for something as small as a fuse. He has done some work for me in the past and both times I had to have it reworked. When asking about the good and bad CB shops out there when it comes to bad 7 outta 10 times his name comes up. I do appreciate your trying to help tho.

I am not a truckdriver! I have been dealing with truckdrivers for 40 years.
I built the Golden Eagle Linear Amplifiers of the 70's through the 90's,
119,000. I wrote the ONLY book ever written on the subject of CB amplifiers. It was the linear amplifier bible--29,000 copies sold over 30 years.

BTW, I am not talking about the garbage generators that have been made under that name for the last 10 years or so. Mine had lo-pass filters with harmonics below 60 Db down.

I was Googling NPC-RC and was led to this thread. When I saw what was being said about the subject I felt that I needed to address it here.

I not only use a Bird Watt meter, I have two of them--one measuring power out and one showing reverse power simultanously,

I have a spectrum analyzer that sold for $32,000 when I purchased it back in 1979. I have various oscilloscopes priced (originally) from $1200.00 to $12,500.00. I also own two Rhode and Swartz RF generators which sold, when purchased in the mid 80's, for $38,000.00 each.

Although, Broadcast stations and hams have used NPC since the 40's and maybe even before that, I am the one that conceived the idea of NPC-RC for cb radios. I first experimented with the idea in 1969 while I was the senior design engineer for General Radiotelephone in Burbank California. My first completely homebrew CB rig used a 6146 tube final running 10 watts dead key and 90 watts on peaks with absolutely NO distortion except for the fact that it was assymetrical modulation which is not a bad kind of distortion--distortion means modyfing anything about the signal other than amplitude.

In the NPC-RC that I do, the negative peake is compressed to about 98% at the same time that the positive peak is doing about 200-350% modulation.

The signal is ABSOLUTELY beautiful on the scope and the harmonics on the radios that I do--ALL of the RANGER-BUILT transistor modulated radios--are below 60 DB down or they do NOT leave the shop!

The problem is that a lot of so-called "techs" are doing mods that are being called NPC-RC that have no relationship to what I do. Since my name is synomemous with NPC-RC at Google, you will have no problem finding many links to the modification.

The TOPGUN is crap as far as I am concerned as is the double diode double resistor mod and the R-238 diode mod. However, all of these mods are often confused with the NPC-RC as I do it,

Contrary to what one post on this thread said, there is a definite power increase with the NPC-RC modification.

However, increased power is NOT the main function of the mod. It also causes much more modulation with crystal clear purity in sound. When done properly, there is nothing that sounds as good as it does. And, when done the radio runs much cooler--almost cold--around the weakest link in a Ranger-Built radio--the 2SB754 AM regulator modulation transistor. (for the hams on this forum--yes I know that it is not really a regulator but because of the similiarity of the schematic to that of a regulated power supply it received that nickname.)

Hey LAWDAWG, are you talkin about the old "Buffalo's Butcher Shop" or the CRICKETS CB SHOP that put him outta business, lol! I'm sure yer talkin the former cb shop - "Buffalo's" CRICKET put that place out of business. She started in the lower Ambest, and when he went under, SHE MOVED IN! - LOL...

Yes she gives our coal drivers great prices and been going to her for 2 years. Her tech is one of the best. They did move into the old Buffalo's building, so that's what yer thinkin.

Good luck! Hope that helps.... COAL

First and foremost, I respect your vast knowledge when it comes to radio, but seeing your name in a post with " Honest CB guy " in the title just doesn't add up.Have you returned or made restitution on the radios you took in for repair or modification 7-8 years ago and never returned?

    cbdoctor Thanks this.

Coal... yes sir you are correct!! it was the "buffalo" Cb shop!! He was a scam artist! To save myself from looking like a fool I wont share my experiences with his shop!!

And Finaly MAD DOG... this CB doc just stumbled in here by accident? I kinda find it hard to believe you know him?? is the world really that small?

I-40 exit 163 on the east bound side in TN. I think they call it the 163 CB shop. They open 24/7 365. They are the only shop I will use for anything.I always carry a couple of back-up radios so if I have a problem I can wait until I get by there. These guys are good there always a bench tech on duty with a outside install guy for installations and a lady to answer questions on 19 when you get in range.FREE coffee & cookies 24/7...I recommend this shop with 5 stars...

As it seems with many cb shops bad techs/and reputations always follow them, I have had 2 cb tech's in the last 6+ years work on my radios, ray formerly of everybodys elec. in southaven ms and andy, both of whom have been working at the former pro-tech now rays cb shop in west memphis ar, beside the petro, for the last 5yrs. protech and redbud had some trouble and some other fly by night techs in there thru the years but ray and andy are the only 2 I let touch my radios and both do great work. I have had 20+ radios that either 1 of these true tech's have touched and have been extremely satisfied. some body mentioned the 163 in dickson tn, my dad quit going there when they couldn't match a galaxy 44 and a silver eagle 200, took it to ray and in 10mins worked great, just my .02

I don't know when this was posted--do not see the dating system on this forum, but If Mad Dop is on here, please explain--on the forum or PM, whatever you are talking about.

About 10 years ago, I received 4 amplifiers via UPS and didn't get two of them back to the owners because I was gone from my shop to California to take care of my mom when she was sick and I had a burgulrary and they were stolen and I had NO record--which I should have had except for the sticker on the unit. I have NEVER heard from the owners since.

I have NEVER taken in any radios for modification and not sent them back--because I have ALWAYS done the modification on the spot while the customer waited for his radio.

I don't know where you got your information and I have NO idea what you are talking about.

I was in the hospital and convelesant home for almost a year and possible have a memory problem but I don't think so. I believe that my memory has completely returned--please advise! If you do so, please send me an email advising me that the post is on here so I can navigate back here--I was Googling something and was led here.
