Bayer Crop Science contaminated rice supply w/ genetically modified strain back in '06. I remember hearing about it because litigation ensued.

That's right. After the LL was found even tho in tiny quantities the EU refused all our rice. These awards are for damages due to the US price going down as a result. I guess in theory every rice farmer in the country is due damages per these court decisions. What I hear is that these were awarded on a per acre basis so it amounts to about $200 an acre. Even after the lawyers take their third it's huge. Obviously the next move is a Bayer appeal and delay tactics so who knows what will eventually happen but being here in rice country it's definitely interesting.

Yes, the appeals could take years. Seems to me they had a problem similar to that in corn. The elevators wouldn't take a certain brand of corn. Can't really remember been a while back.

That was a genetically modified brand called Starlink. Something about it caused allergies in tests or something, it made it into the marketplace before all the tests were complete. I only remember it because for a while around here all the elevators had signs saying "NO STARLINK CORN". I think the company had to pay to have it rounded up and hauled away.

Yes, you're right. Star link. I looked up on internet and said it was for animal food only and somehow some got in the human food side. Had something to do with bad reactions in some people, like RW said allergies. You're right the company had to get rid of the corn.

It's going to be an ongoing problem too. Genetically modified canola right now is being introduced in Australia but their biggest market being Japan is problematic because of laws there against import of genetically engineered food product.

Nope. Just can't make myself haul for $1.00 a mile. I haven't found any backhauls that paid enough. I made enough doing harvest I can wait quite a while before hauling those loads.
