You're right crop jocky hauling out of field pays good. In my case hauling commercial will work out better for me. He was a small farmer and had marginal land.

Does your Dad run high sided trailers? I'm presuming he does if he hauls sunflowers.

I try to stay local the pay is usually good. I was doing ok local except for last couple years. We had a oversupply of trucks and a lousy dispatcher. The dispatcher has left and it has gotten better but there are still quite a few trucks around. This winter I may go out further if the local drys up, depends on the rates too.

10-4.....i have been kicking the otr idea around but so far no cigar....pt brokers here in mississippi does alot of otr hopper stuff but i find their rates are pretty low....a few weeks ago i was hauling wet corn about 4mi roundtrip out of the field to a catfish feed plant and it paid 17 cents....i was averaging 8 loads a day at 1000-1100 bu per load....a little over $1400 per day and a grand total of less than 100 mi driven....now show me a broker that can beat that over the road....but the problem here is too many trucks....every mothers son around here drags a ragged truck and hopper outta the weeds come harvest season and they cut the rates because they can afford to...they dont insure trucks or make them legal...and here i am running a $100,000 rig trying to stay afloat...

That's why I like hauling elevator to elevator during harvest. The grain company I haul for asks to see your permits before you can haul for them.

Historically our loads drop off after fall harvest. This usually means the rates will fall because of the amount of trucks around. I doubt this year will be any different but I can hope.

yeah i haul alot elevator to elevator around here it is what we call transfers they dont pay great usually 12-15 cents for a 40 - 45 mi run so we usually only haul them at night....the inland elevators just ship out at night after getting full during the day to empty out on a river barge on a river elevator

Interesting, we hardly ever haul at night as far as transfers go. Usually the terminal elevator closes at 7 pm during fall harvest. Some terminal elevators years back were open 24 hrs during wheat harvest but they don't do that anymore.

I'm curious do you have the Latino truckers in MS too? They are hard on our rates here.
