That's how this guy started out a few years ago. Just a couple old straight trucks and borrowed some equipment. He adds new customers every year. They see the job he's doing for their neighbors and say, hey, I've got a field or two up the road, can you do those too?

Probably the best way to get into it now would be to sign a truck on with a small outfit like that and as it grows end up with your own crew. The long hours and the fact that there was no way to log anything right was what shied me away from it.

LOL! Man, I could tell you all about running L2's:biggrin_2559: I ran one for 10 years before Dad decided we were either going to truck or farm - but we weren't going to keep doing both. Appearantly there was more money in trucking than farming. (Yes - farming sucks worse than trucking - at least dryland farming does.)

Before I got an L2, I had the privelege of runnig an F for a year. I was 10 years old, and ran for half an hour with the trap door open and didn't have a clue about what I was doing wrong. It was after that Dad decided I needed to be in something a little more advanced that could tell me when I was screwing up! :yes2557:

The thing I hated most about those L2's was that it took at least an hour to get those things ready in the morning. Between greasing, fueling, and oiling a million chains, they were maintenance hogs. Not to mention, if you pulled into a field across from a Deere machine that was running, it looked like he was cutting in road gear while you were pushing your "silver seeder" hard at 3mph. At the end of the day, though, they were probably the best combines Gleaner ever built. Far better than the early rotaries that replaced them.

    Man, I kinda miss those days...just a little:biggrin_25525:

John - if you wanna partner up in a custom harvest outfit, I'm game - but you gotta do the trucking, and buy all the beer I'm gonna drink running the combine. We won't make any money, but we'll have one heck of a time doing it!

If you guys get started up, let me know, I'll be your cart driver. I might be able to manage to keep up with a one combine operation! :biggrin_2559:

Well if we'll be cutting with an L2, you'll have plenty of time to spare! It's pretty slow going with those machines compared to the equipment that's running today.

Big John and RW. Thank this.

Yes, that would be like wearing the air. That would be too humid for me. I'm too used to the wind don't know what to do when there isn't any.

We got up to 104 here today. I like it when it is around 75 to 79 all the time. The sad part it is only the first of June.
