Dumps are still running. 10-13 hour days all last week, 7.5 today since everything decided to break at once, as usual. Full days lined up tomorrow and the next. Price of diesel holding steady while gas shoots up, dunno what's going on there.

Yes, Finished up big grain contract yesterday... loads I've been quoted recently are low.

Diesel has been going up here. $3.79 right now. The brokers think diesel is still $3.40 or lower.

    Hey all
Live in central illinois. Would like to get off the road at some point. Neighbor has a pretty decent old Mack cheap. What is a mechanic when I was younger.
Can a guy with a hopper still survive doing a local stuff?

You can survive hauling local but you need some good contacts... and that can change when you change merchandisers, dispatchers etc. I just had one quit and have to start over with a new one. During winter probably going to have to go out further on runs.

You're in a pretty good location to take advantage of all the activity in Decatur. There are many who run year round exclusively for ADM and probably Tate & Lyle too.

The QT went from $3.47 to $3.49 while the Petro and TA right across the road shot up to $3.63. The price of oil was falling as supply backed up. Oh, they think there's going to be another stimulus to cash in on so they're driving the price up artificially. Ugh. So this should be a bubble that will break pretty quick.

Welcome to the hopper thread Streetrods. I think this is going to be a very rough harvest and crop year to be in the grain hauling business. So this might not be a good year to start up. But if you've got some mechanical ability, that's a big thing to have going in your favor. Talk to some people, get some contacts, put a plan together, and keep your overhead low starting out. In my area, its difficult if not impossible to survive doing just local stuff with a hopper, so I've got a flat also to be more diversified.

Wheathauler did you get your blower motor changed, or is it as hot out there as it is here? It was about 103 here today. :biggrin_25521:

My cousin that pulls the step-deck brought my son a load of alfalfa hay for the dairy he picked up in Abilene yesterday ,he said the heat out there was terrible.

WH,how many different grain merchants have you had to ''break in'' since '09,3 or 4?
