You imply a single cause fallacy. Crashes are by far most often the result of several "factors".
But, that's the way the media ~always portrays crashes. "Caused by fog, caused by speeding, caused by icy conditions." "The cause of the crash has not been determined/is being investigated."
People want simple answers to complex questions, it's just human nature.

That's nonsense and you know it. I've been seeing the same argument for years now... somehow the "computer tells you when you can sleep, eat, relieve yourself, drive..." and it's all bull. ELDs no more control you than the pen tells the ink to inform the paper that you can now pick your nose. The only thing that is really different under ELDs is that the driver can no longer can tear up 500 log pages until he or she finally arrives at a contrived story that attempts conform to what is legal under the HOS regulations. One has to have a plan before the injectors start squirting fuel. You get one chance with ELDs, meaning the driver had best know what the HOS regulations allows one to do... not some hazy idea of how he's going to lie his way out of the current mess he's just created.gpsman and Cranky Yankee Thank this.

eLogs can put a driver into a position of driving hours [or time of day] he/she doesn't normally care to run to make pickup and delivery appointments, where on paper the driver could "make it work" to better fit in with their preferred schedule. I don't think anyone can argue this point. Is it unlawful to "work" a paper log? Of course it is. But it's also unlawful to crash and hurt somebody and destroy property because you're tired ... but you're legal is the important thing.
eLogs are here to stay, like it or not. It's up to the carriers to try and do better to keep drivers moving in a more consistent manner and to avoid bizarre scheduling occurrences that can screw up an entire week, and put drivers in a difficult situation. I CAN NOT sleep when the sun is out. I will be in the sleeper and I will get a full 10, but when that 10 hour break is up at 17:00 because of poor scheduling or lack of freight selection and that freight has to move, there is no guarantee I am "rested". -
Also, eLogs add a new level of stress some days that I never dealt with on paper. I have mixed emotions about eLogs. They have pros and cons but the cons are often deal breakers at some point [for some] and can not be dealt with other then to go into flagrant violation which leads to eventual termination. Trying to be "very productive" on eLogs can be very difficult some weeks when the freight/loads/wx don't flow right
