Buck and Half, That was a very good post, but my heads ready to explode reading it. Please use paragraphs next time or skip a line every now and then.
what ever changes we will end up with will be " in public interest " (read who ever had the deepest pockets)... The reset will be the bad thing to loose... 10 or 11 hours will not really matter, until all the time spent waiting for loading or unloading is addressed and rulings made on that issue...
I would simplify the logbook. Only two lines: ON-DUTY and OFF-DUTY. When you start the day you go on-duty for up to 12 hours, you flag a pretrip and location and then just shade the times you are driving up to 10 hours a day. When you go off-duty you flag where you are again and then have to take a minimum 12 hours off.
If they do get rid of the 34 I would advise everybody start learning how to roll your 70/8 so you never zero your hours.
So... it comes down to safety. They figure that by imposing limits on driving hours, that would make it safe. Well, not really. Just because a driver officially has several hours left to drive, doesn't mean that he got enough rest before getting behind the wheel. What if instead of sleeping, the driver stayed up all night? Plus some people need more sleep than others // some people can stay awake and alert longer than others. So....
Sounds great, but why would you "HAVE TO" to take a minimum of 12 hrs off? If you're well rested and ready to drive again at, say, 9 or 10 hrs later...?
Read the book. It says you must have 10 hours off duty or 10 hours in the sleeper. I never saw anything that says you have to sleep for 10 hours.
