You got a 14 hour clock that once it starts does not stop... only way to reset your 14 hour clock is if take a 10 hour break off duty/ sleeper. (Somebody else can fill in about splits but for now let’s not complicate it.)
At no point can you go over 8 hours without having a 30 min break.
Now you can work over your 14 hours but you can not drive. Say For whatever reason you work 3 hours over your 14 not a violation but you cannot drive until you show a 10 hour break.
Recaps hit at midnight in your home terminals time zone. If you need help understanding recaps let us know.

Remember you've got x hours per 7 days total. At midnite day 7 rolls of and day 6 becomes day 7. So if you drove 12 hours on day 7 and 10 hours on day 6. You'd gain 2 hours back.
Reminder: my info is from the book. Not driving. Trust the experts before/above me.farmerjohn64 Thanks this. -
So this is the 70 hour rule.(Next time you’re in a truck stop look in a paper log book, they usually have a section in the front of the logbook to chart recaps) but the rule is you can’t drive/ work (really drive cause you can work/ stay on duty but cannot drive if )over 70 hours in a (rolling) 8 day period.
So for example let’s say you worked a 8.5 hours everyday off a fresh 70.
Day.1 8.5 >> hours available tomorrow 61.5
Day2 8.5 >> 53
Day 3 8.5 >> 44.5
Day4 8.5 >>36
Day 5 8.5 >>27.5
Day6 8.5>> 19
Day7 8.5>>10.5
Day8>> 2
Day 9>> Day one drops off meaning the hours worked on day one (8.5 are now recap’d)
So to start day 9 you’ll have 10.5 hours available(day 1 recaps + the 2 hours available after day 8) and let’s say you worked another 8.5
Day 9 8.5>> 2 +recap from day 2=10.5
Day 10 8.5>> 2 + recap from day 3=10.5
And so on.
For all hours to reset you need a 34. Again you can work over the 70 but if you want to drive you cannot unless you have hours available and are in good standing after a 10 hour break.GrumpyJoe, Truckermania, Dockbumper and 3 others Thank this. -

Second vote for him, but I'll do it if asked.farmerjohn64 and Wasted Thyme Thank this. -
Okay here’s another question; what if you know ahead of time that you’re gonna be out of time soon after you get to the shipper and the shipper says you can’t park on the premises (I just called); Western’s policy on PC is (well part of it) if you run out of time at the consignee/shipper then you can indeed use PC to go to the nearest truck stop; my question is is this still okay even though I know ahead of time I’ll only have an hour left once I get there? Just seems like cheating the system I guess

I'd google closest safe parking to your shipper. There might be something close.
The biggest thing to remember. If using PC to get to safe parking. It has to be the closest. Period. Not closest on your route.tarmadilo, skellr and farmerjohn64 Thank this. -
