Maybe 1.39 going to Canada? I have called a bunch of them lately and it's more like 1.20 to 1.29. I can't seem to make the jump for that rate.

Well thanks for being honest with me and not sugar coating it!!

Unfortunately tow-away price per mile fell through the floor this year. With the decline in diesel fuel most of the delivery companies have responded with lower per mile pay. Tons of Texas and North Dakota license plates in the yard all week. The manufactures are begging to ship units. It should be a busy Feb/March. I have been seeing $1.10 to 1.30 per mile. Canada $1.40 - 1.60, (but very little Canada for some reason- maybe it’s too winter up there).

1.10 to 1.30 @ mile and that's one way pay, where's the driver's pay ?

If someone was to start a thread here asking Hot Shot O/Os, how long they stayed in business, I'll bet that at least 85% would be less than 2 years. Some people can get on with a company that can/will keep them busy & make enough to stay in business for a while but, over all, the HS business is not a good business to get into... generally speaking.

I think your perception is right. It’s a great way to transition to an OTR job, or for something to do in retirement. Most of the people I have contact with fall into that category. Should H/S be a long term career goal? Maybe - for some. Understanding that you are a commodity for the better part of your career and that it will take a long time to develop your business will put you ahead of individuals who don’t have a clear understanding of the challenges involved.

...And to top it off - insurance has gone up 5-12% across the board. Too many accidents last year I guess.

Right now it's not a nothing business to get into. I've done it for nine years now and have just about reached the FULL point. First two years I made nothing learning the business next few years my RPM improved till about eighteen months ago. It's declined to near nothing now or maybe it's because I refuse to work for nothing anymore.
Once you figure your "total" investment things look different, I believe this applies to class8 as well.
There will be a few who call themselves dispatchers or dispatch services and they are nothing more than snake oil salesmen peddling a fantasy to those stupid enough to listen.
The best thing going for a hotshot hauler is his tax deductions and some of the bright ones kill that by LLCing or INCing their business. I would think long and hard before jumping in, but if you do I have one trailer that's for sale. -
Lots of paperwork, but relatively easy if you know a good broker.

Be sure you know what your getting into!!! I started in Sept. Out by October.. Was running direct for a company that told me a little white lie on Pay per mile.. I got out because I had a local job offer that would pay just as much and I didn't have to be away from my kids. Now trying to get rid of trailer.
