If I'm doing a 34 and have the chance, then yes I'll get a hotel room. It's nice to get out of the truck once in awhile.

It is my understanding that to idle a truck for 10 hours would be 10 to 12 gallons of fuel. At $3.60 a gallon (more) that works out to $36 to $43.20. You can get a motel room for that easily enough. See if your company has an agreement with a motel change.
A swimming pool in this heat is worth it. -
Only when the truck is in the shop!
I used to once in a while when it was super cold or hot, but now that I have an APU don't anymore. Back when I did I would either have a lousy night's sleep from noisy neighbors, or be worried about somebody breaking into my truck.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
no motel and no APU. I idle if need be,(most of the time).. also don't run northeast. my company does not mind and I can't afford a motel.
when apu's become standard equipment, people will not need to idle. I have ac and heat in my house. the truck I drive is my home away from and will have the same conditions for proper sleep.
I've only gotten a motel,(co. paid), a hand full of times in all my yrs of otr driving. those were for breakdowns. -
If I'm doing a reset on the road, I'll get a room. Once in a while if there's a conflict in a delivery and I'm stuck somewhere an extra day I'll get a room as well. It's nice to spend a night or so out of the truck once in a while.
The longest I've gotten a motel room was 3 days in Abilene 2 weeks ago when my truck decided to develop turbo problems. -
my companies general rule, if the truck is gonna idle longer than 10 hrs get a room, but there are other factors also, I every two weeks I do a delivery for a garage door company, I have to hump all the doors, hardware, track, etc. to the back of the trailer, 6 to 8 stops over two days. I leave SUnday afternoon and get back Tuesday, I sleep in the truck Sunday night, but without fail I get a room Monday. Why? I'm usually parked 14 hrs, I'm filthy, grimey, and want some decent rest, as well I only have a 48" flat top sleeper, so I really don't have a lot of room to be comfortable in. Longest I've ever stayed, earlier this year Monday afternoon til Thursday morning after my fan belt shredded and took the front of the engine off.

I generally get a room once a week, just to get out of the truck. Just to get out of trucking, for one day, at least.

At one gallon per hour and fuel in this area at the moment... $39.40 per 10 hours. So if your staying at motel 6 for $42 ... No big deal... If your staying at the country inn for $80-100 then it's deff not saving you money.

We only stayed in a motel 1 time in a year a breakdown on truck and none so far this time around; knock on wood.

I get a room 1-2 nights week, depending on a lot of factors, when/where. And save the receipts. I enjoy eating/drinking where "regular" people hang out at. I make the most of my restarts out on the road. I need to shower and sleep in something larger than a closet once in a while. I typically accumulate $4,000-$5,000 year worth of hotel rates away from home that I itemize and deduct. But I too have no "home" to pay for other than a storage unit. But I don't rely solely on trucking wages to survive, thank goodness and that may have a lot to do with it.
CommDriver and CertifiedSweetie Thank this.
