No! In order to log sleeper berth, you must have a sleeper. It doesn't matter if you lay across the front seats for a nap, you cannot log line 2 if you don't have a sleeper.

If you have access to a copy of the FMCSR pocketbook, it states how many hours a day you can be on duty and drive. My understanding of the HOS rules is you can be ON DUTY NOT DRIVING past your 14, you just can't drive. If your company has people who work weekends then you would fall under the 70hrs in 8 days rule, meaning your TOTAL hrs in an 8 day period CANNOT exceed 70, & if you use your 70 you have to be down for a full 34hrs. If I were you, I would talk with your company's safety department to make sure you're doing things correctly.

Not sure what you mean by loggin loose leaf. How did you keep logs before. If you are using a paper log, you need to be careful and stay on the right lines, a good white out pen helps to correct if you do get a spot where something is logged wrong. And as far as I know they still use (I guess that is what it is called where you add up all your figures) re-cap on those logs where everything has to add up.

The driving time is only 11 hrs, you have 14hrs open window only, so that means you have 3hrs for doing your pre-trip, post-trip inspections, breaks, fueling, waiting at the shipper, etc. Once you start the time frame or window starts, you just have to make sure you keep your log on track as usual.
You do have to have 10 hrs off in the sleeper, and if stopped sleeping, dreaming out the window whatever, it is a good thing to pull your front window curtain and not let the powers that be see you in the drivers seat (at least I think that still holds true).

[h=2]HOS Final Rule (December 2011) for CMV Drivers[/h]
This goes into effect July, 2013 I guess.

The new hours of service state that you are to have a 30-minute break

    1. (2) Do I have to take a break exactly 8 hours after I come on duty?
    2. No, the rule gives drivers flexibility in when and where to take the break. The rule only prohibits driving if more than 8 consecutive hours have passed since the last off-duty period of at least 30 minutes. For example, if a driver spends 2 hours loading at the beginning of the day, then has a 10-hour drive ahead, he or she must take the break no later than 8 hours after coming on duty. The driver can, however, take the break earlier. If he or she takes a half-hour or more break at some point between the 4th and 8th hours after coming on duty, the driver can complete the rest of the planned 10 hours of driving without another break.
    3. (3) Does the break have to be spent resting?
    4. No. The driver must be off duty for at least a half hour. Meal breaks or any other off-duty time of at least 30 minutes qualifies as a break. Drivers carrying certain explosives, who are required to attend the vehicle at all times, are allowed to count attendance time, which is on duty, toward the break if they do no other work during that time.
    5. (4) Can the shorter sleeper-berth break (minimum 2 hours) be used to meet the half-hour break requirement?
    6. Yes. Any off-duty or sleeper-berth period of 30 minutes or more will meet the requirement.
    7. (5) Does the break count against the 14-hour driving window?
    8. Yes. Allowing off-duty time to extend the work day would allow drivers to drive long past the time when fatigue becomes extreme. The 14-consecutive-hour rule was adopted to prevent that and to help drivers maintain a schedule that is consistent with circadian rhythms.

I think this is what the HOS says still on the air miles, etc.

I worked at a retired independant home where our manager because he for a short period of time drove the bus for the facility to run residents around ended up having to clock in and out each day, we were all salaried and didn't clock in or out, but because he had a cdl this is what you had to do.

I do not believe you can extend your off duty past 14 hrs, see my #13 post. Your window ends at 14, and you should be in the sleeper berth (we know you all just drop and jump in the hay, right).

Some companies now require a post-trip inspection too of 15 min.

I just wonder how they logged this years ago before all the sleepers came along, if you were otr. I know I have seen a trucker without the sleeper, sleeping on the steering wheel while waiting, and I don't think he looked like he paid for any motels at night, this was in 2008.

    Just wondering.

ok no this aint a day job lol ill be running mass rhode island im aware of 34 hour reset after 70 hours. ill be running mon-fri. i know you supose to show pre and post trip for half hour. i logged maybe 4 times in my 3 years of driving. my job i had i worked maybe 65 hours a week just to make 500 dollars. so i figured if we keep this drought up farmers will start seliing cuz feed price is ganna be high so. i guess its always something i wanted to do since i started driving truck is to run dump trailer all the time so miss well jump at it now i guess. so i have 14 hours to do w/e but in them 14 hours i can only drive 11 n then need 10 hours of sleeper berth and then that restarts my 14 hours again? correct. also i know you need to add your hours at the end of each day. also i seen his logs he only uses off duty driving and on duty not driving n he claims he got dot 4 times since he was a o/o but if you guys r saying thats wrong im def not ganna do that lol and where would i beable to get one of those fmsca hand books. and this is all new to me like i said this is my first job ill have to log everyday. Also loose leaf is just pages out of log book with pti forms together with the log so there for i only need 7 days previous logs. any more info will be helpful to thanks to all the replies so far.
