    The train arrived in Holland at 5:10 a.m., dropped off passengers, then proceeded east toward Grand Rapids, Bates said.
    After less than a mile, the train stopped. Passengers were told the crew had been on duty too long and were not permitted to travel any farther, Bates said.
    "Everyone got a chuckle out of that," Bates said. "He can't go the last 25 miles? He's been on the train just as long as we have."
    Magliari said Amtrak and the train employees could have faced fines if the crew had worked beyond the 12-hour federal limit.
