A simple thing to do if running with paper logs. To remember your 14 hour window, at the start of your 14 circle the time on the hour bar (located above line 1 and below line 4), then place a circle at the end of your 14. This way should you happen be to tired to do the math of when you started you have a simple reminder of when your day must end.

H.O.S. can be one of if not the most confusing part of truck driving...
Not to mention the applications they can be used,, for a particular situation.

    But for the basics...
Do not drive more than 11 hrs in a 14 hr period.
Be off duty or in the sleeper for at least 10 hrs prior to coming back on duty.
Do not exceed 70 hrs in 7 days (this is mainly for OTR drivers)

That's it in as basic an explaination there is. To go into this secnario or that would take up alot of time and space...I always let my company know via qualcom every day as to my available hrs...helps to end confusion. I'll run as many "legal" hrs in a day as they want me to. But when I approach the end of my 70 hrs. I inform them.
I have on several occasions made an attempt to explain to them how to keep a driver moving without a 34 hr restart.. But if there is freight to move and you are there to move it....well then they can't b###h at me about being out of hrs.
I log what I do when I do it..and despite what others may think, I nor my family has ever gone hungry...and I've always had a few bucks in my pocket. Trucking will never make you rich. I have no intention of knocking myself out trying to do so.
With this new system CSA2010 coming down things are going to get just a little bit tougher for companies and drivers who wish to ignore HOS regulations.
Remember it's your license...protect it. Without it you'll make a lot less money if any.
