Actually, using those is a violation, in and on itself, nothing can cover the original placard inside the white line boundaries, not tape, mud, etc. MD and OH will pull you for that. DOT cop didn't get laid that morning, and you're OOS because he/she/them has a bad day.

Not to be argumentative but I ran for Suttles Tank and R&L Carriers all over the northeast and Great Lakes region for many years. We always used clear tape or coat hangers to help keep placards in place and no one I ever knew ever had anything said about it

Some guys will put small pieces of gravel between the placard and the cross pieces of the holder to hold the placard in place. Whatever works.

That's good only two other times have i had a placard blow off but I caught it. It's always been on the side or rear and I have had to use tape before and even once I've had to gorilla tape the placard hold that flips because the rivets came out. I pre-tripped even looked at the dates on the tank. Maybe I'll start using a check list.

Welp, got my new side gear box installed. It's a nice big one, the guys at the chrome shop tried to get me to buy a smaller one but we have to carry so much and then I like to carry what I believe I need and it adds up. Got my new fire extinguisher installed next to my drivers seat and started organizing the side gear boxes better. I see a lot of flat bed guys with boxes on there trailer for what not. I decided to under coat mine with truck bed liner and also clear coated it. Bed liner also went on the inside bottom. I meant to paint the inside walls shiny metallic gold but got silver metallic mistakenly. It makes metal look new and I painted a little of the intake pipes under the hood and it makes it look new I was smiling ear to ear.

I would hope you always check the inspection dates on the tank. Most chemical plants and refineries will check theses before loading. But if you load one that has expired inspections and the DOT sees it, the fines can be huge.

    Knucklehead and CruzControhl2 Thank this.

I take pictures of my wagons placards,,because they rarely provide spares and paper placards are notorious for dissolving en route…not enough placard holders on this wagon so shop Riveted the placard on…. IMG_3073.jpeg

From now on I no longer use the paper placards and only the flip placards which most our trailers have. Only once in 6yrs of driving tanker (and almost 8 driving) has the rivets holding the flip placard on came loose and I had to tape it in place.

The other thing that bothers me is that when I purchased my fire extinguisher I bought it for more than what I needed. As an owner op I wouldn’t want to take the chance of my equipment burning down if something happened. Yes the fire extinguisher discharged a little but it was three (3) times the size of what’s required.
I’ve only once had to use a fire extinguisher as a new driver with less than 6 months experience years ago when my trailers wheel started smoking. No doing of my own, I wasn’t on the brakes. I think if I recall a wheel seal went bad. Yes I checked the trailer before leaving. After being flagged down by a pickup I pulled over to see smoke and a fire starting the size of my four fingers. I used my fire extinguisher, all of it and the smoking continued. Finally an older lady trucker pulled up on me and said I’d been trying to catch you and get you on the Cb. (I didn’t have one). We used her fire extinguisher and finally got it all put out.
Months later I bought a CB. The point is I know that a little bitty extinguisher might not be enough so I thought of that when I got this big fire extinguisher that happened to be discharged a smidge.
