So they can lower their operating expenses in an attempt to remain competitive in a failing economy.

Oh, I don't know, Walmart rakes it in with a combine, I highly doubt they are concerned with operating expenses. We, the consumer ends up footing the bill for that. As it was mentioned, Walmart is gargantuan, our Walmart (#291) is packed from 6am to close. With our only other food store, Safeway, Walmart has the market cornered on everything else. The shelves are continually empty, and with the influx of Cal./Denver residents, it's only going to get worse. I hear Costco is already eyeing up property, as I live in one of the fastest growing parts of Colorado. Point being, there just aren't enough drivers to supply the stores. When I saw a Safeway( union) wagon being pulled by an England ( non-union) truck, that told me, Albertsons is having the same issues.
So, what's happening? Companies have no choice but to open the pool up to who would normally never turn a wheel. I read, in 2024, we had a deficit of 82,000 drivers. Meaning, more quit than were hired, for a number of reasons. You know what's big now, is this home delivery thing. It depletes the stock even faster, and I heard is poorly run. I'm not really sure how this is going to turn out. The regulations are simply too strict, combined with a lack of interest in the job, doesn't look good for our transportation needs of the future, if it's this xxxxed up now.

    If the economy gets bad.

They always turn to trucking. There won't be a driver shortage then.

It's probably the only profession that hires anyone.

The only positive about it this time.

Not many can drive a stick.

The 5000 to 15000 trucks is how the narrative of driver shortage gets passed. Big powerhouse companies push it for that reason. Our leaders use the powerhouse companies as the measuring stick for the need for drivers.

Didn't they implement a two-tier system a few years ago? One for the veteran drivers and another for anyone hired after that? Probably not anywhere as good of a job as it used to be.

That's simply not true. They treat drivers very well. I wouldn't work somewhere I wasn't respected.

We have a few day cab drivers home every day. I could go home nearly every night myself but I never do. If you're making a $100k at a mega you're hustling and working hard. You don't have to do that to make a $100k at Walmart.
