Yeah they do that randomly. They have standards and they're going to check to make sure those are maintained. Do the job as it's expected and nobody will ever talk to you about it. Cut corners and somebody will talk with you.
Now take a look at your typical truck stop what's passing through there and see what no standards ends up being.
It ain't everybody's job but it is a good one that pays very well. If you can't be held accountable for your actions it won't be for you.

The same reason tankers hire inexperienced drivers today.
I remember tankers, especially hazmat wouldn’t even talk to you unless you had 2-3 years verifiable OTR experience. -
Does Wal-Mart still have 57' trailers???
-
Those are in Canada.
-
.
No, I delivered a couple new 57' trailers to WalMart DCS's in Texas and OK.... -
I didn’t think 57s were allowed in America. Unless permitted.
-
-
Well then its up to the recruiters to make sure they hire the best idiots they can find.
-
Wrong. I know a guy that uses one here in Louisiana. No permit needed. They may not be allowed in all states but definitely allowed down here. What's really hilarious is he uses it with a single axle daycab. He never hauls a heavy load but hauls bulky final-mile type items. It's a funny looking rig going down the road. The trailer is 57' long and the truck is like 8'. LOL

I'm pretty sure someone already posted that answer.
