The 1099 companies need to be monitored a lot more closely. I run for a 1099 company that does things pretty much by the book. However, we have several O/O's that have multiple trucks that pay their drivers as 1099 contractors. And these folks do anything they can to cheat the system.

I don't think any of us were talking about illegal immigrants. The topic was people here, legally. tho working under illegal situations, 1099 for example. bad log books and unsafe equipment for another.

If you drive another person's truck. It's illegally operating under a 1099. the irs is very clear on this, along with the state labor boards.

I have no reason to doubt what my friend tells me about the eastern euro community around Chicago area. Many of them do in fact work on a 1099 basis tax free then go back to the old country for several months a year. And come back when they need more money. What do you find so impossible to believe about such a thing?

I worked for a Chicago European outfit for 2 years... Half of the drivers that came from Europe would come here work for 6 months and go back home for 6 months and repeat the cycle...

I drive my own truck. But there is a legal way to drive someone else's truck in a 1099 situation. You have to lease/rent the truck from the owner and run it as your own.

Don't confuse legal with haven't been caught. Lots of people do what your describing here, and get away with it..till they get an audit. And most of us in this industry will be audited, it's more a matter of when, not if.
