This might start an arguement but I think that a company can get a better class of drivers if they pay hourly with over-time and offer good benefits.
That being said, the company has to want a better class of drivers and that doesn't seem to include a lot of the megas.

Hourly is common in the industry. My job pays hourly for time spent waiting, plus mileage, plus drop and hook pay, plus stop pay, plus a certain amount for each piece unloaded, plus they pay me for fueling the truck.

I don’t get this nonsense about not getting paid for the time you sit waiting. You just said you make 150 or 200 per day. So anything that happens in that day, you get paid. So you ARE getting paid. Stop saying you are not getting paid. Drives me crazy when people say that.

What if you went to work tomorrow and did one stop, then your boss called and told you to go home and take the rest of the day off. Would you be on here whining because you are being overpaid for not working? I didn’t think so.

Time spent away from home waiting to get loaded or unloaded pays me hourly. If others don't get paid for that time they are being robbed of time with their family.

i am paid on a "modified salary". i and my coworkers have a dedicated account. in fact, company wide, all of us get paid this way.

now even being on this so-called salary, we do not get paid for sick days, or requested time off.

but, we do get paid holidays (that are normally observed in trucking), we get breakdown pay, and we DO get paid if we are told to stay home, due to bad weather, like snowstorms. but it is a half nights pay, not a full night. we also get paid breakdown pay, from the minute we call our boss, till the time we are ready to go. it IS on the honor system, which i can assure you, that someone at my company verifies the time we left, as they call the road service company. so really, no chance to lie.

if we cannot finish our routes, due to severe snowstorms, and we have to turn around ( and all of us have had to do this) we still get a full nights pay, as at least, we "made the attempt".

we DO get paid for an extra stop, if we have one, that is, if either the customer asks us, or our boss asks us. he usually throws an extra $100 to do so.. but we CAN refuse that extra stop as well, and i ALWAYS refuse an extra stop. i refuse to go onto a military base out of my way. and i NEVER get any flack for that, as the customers local trucks go there every day, or so, so they can handle the BS.

So if the run normally takes 9 hours and unforseen circumstances make the run take 12 hours how am I getting paid for the additional time? Short answer, I'm not. Every non-cdl job I ever had, if I spent more time at work it would be reflected in my paycheck. Don't know why drivers put up with the nonsense. In fact dump trucking was hourly but seasonal. If I could go back to that in the summer I would, switch jobs with the season. Go back to milk in the fall.

For the time being I'm going to stay where I am, getting experience.... But the point of this thread is what I'm going to do in a year or two.

I work hourly and I think it's great. Snow on Donner Pass. I'm chilling in Reno on duty getting paid waiting for the controls to come off while other drivers are getting pissed about no miles = no money.

Again, you complain about the days you work extra for the same pay, but what about the days you work LESS for the same pay? You don’t complain about that do you? I rest my case.
