Hobbies, I do photography, photo editing, art, and enjoy games on the computer. Expect everything to suck and stuff doesn't stress you out as much heh.

Nose=smell. After awhile you'll get to know the difference between brakes, clutch, oil burning, electrical, and how they smell different.

Feel= vibration. If you feel the steering wheel vibrating more than normal you can start looking at the steering box all the way down to the wheels. If you look at the mirrors and they are shaking like crazy you can bet it's a U-Joint going out. Or any part in the drive line.

Sight= even at night you can see smoke coming off the brakes. You might have to touch the brakes to light up the area but it's worth investigating. Keep checking those mirrors all the time.

Hearing= What goes bump in the night should bring suspicion.

Of course there's all kinds of different scenarios out of the 5 senses, sight, hearing, taste, feel, and smell and you can learn to use these to drive better. It's a great feeling when you catch a part or item that's about to explode and you save tons of money and time. Checking your truck doesn't stop once you've done your inspection and start down the road. You'll got to be checking all the time. I don't mean to sound like I know it all because I'm far from it but I guess we just check more since we're hauling gasoline. It's just a good safety habit that I've gotten myself into and it works well most of the time. Not all because things are just going to happen out of your control but you do want to minimize as much as you can.

I find making comments to myself about the scenario helps.

4-wheeler cuts across 4 lanes to make their exit? "Way to go, moron."

4-wheeler cuts into your lane only to have to slow down shortly after because of traffic? "Now see that's why I was slowing down in the first place."

4-wheelers slow to move after a traffic light turns green? "Green means go, people."

Truck driver does something dumb and damages property? "Now this is why we can't have nice things."

..it's all in how you handle it.
