    How do I do it?

Well, speaking just for myself of course, this is a job best suited for those who work well independently, and it became very apparent very quickly that working alone was my cup of tea, with no co-workers in the immediate vicinity to breath down my neck and second guess every move I make. Thus, the decision was made to stick with this "trucking" thIng.

Now, I've done the flatbed and heavy haul thing, and frankly it didn't pay what I thought it should. Thus, the decision was made to try the LTL thing, which not only paid more right off the bat, but is perfect for those of us who find a certain security in the routine and predictable. Land a route going to an area you like, in my case MD's beautiful eastern shore, and you'll have it made.

Ah yes the Eastern Shore. I have ancestors buried at Rock Creek (It has about like 120 graves... dating to 1790 or so...) I got 5 of them there. Their motto? (Somerset City) "Always the same"

I hope to god they did not urbanize that Eastern Shore. It needs to stay the same....

That's out by Deal Island, from what I could find. I might go look someday...

Very different class of people across the bay than the rest of the state, and it's a good bet the idea of "urbanization" will not be particularly well received to put it mildly.

Another thing is specialize in something. When people say pulling tankers pays more it does.

I hauled grease and dead animals from locker plants my first four months and worked 70 hours a week or more and was gone 50% of the time.

I was hating driving and browsing craigslist. Found a nice dude who has a fuel company with a few trucks who needed a guy to haul def. he just liked me, zero tanker experience and couldn’t drive a 10 speed.

He taught me to drive a 10 speed now I’m making 400 more a week and working half as much and home everyday except once a month or so.

Tanker is where it’s at if you want to be home daily and still make money and have a life. Otr isn’t for me.

I'm currently getting "paid per load" only where I'm at right now. Whether it's getting a preloaded trailer unloaded at the local cheeseplant, or loading a trailer at a barn. No pay for waiting, or miles/time driven between the dropyard and the barn. Since the barn loading involves turnarounds that usually bring most of us down to three loads a night before safety starts screaming about going over hours, I'm really digging into going hourly again. During my time at Ruan, the work was hectic at times. But we never really had to worry about any "famine weeks" there due to having a guaranteed, 12 hour shift with hourly pay.
This per load and per mile scheme I've been back on for the past, two years has reared that ugly reality as our loads per day have gone down and 2-3 a night just isn't cutting it.
Then of course there's all those clowns heading over to Bynum expecting something different. Just another food-grade carrier. Same garbage, different dump.

I didnt know you were from that area.

I grew up in DC and later bought my first house in Chesapeake Beach. Right off 8th st,. a little bit off where 260 comes down into the beach. Right on the water. Sold the place years ago. Big money developers came in and the town tried to rid itself of the white trash image that still lives there. My house was torn down,.. it was on the water right behind where Chaney's was. There is a hotel there now. Even the public beach is gone,.. hotel now.

Gerald Donovan ruined that place in my personal opinion.

I have friends who live over near Salisbury. I still visit from time to time. Eastern Shore is still pretty much as it has been for the last 30 - 40 yrs or so. Used to hit the car shows in Ocean city all the time. My fondest memories as a child was the old arcade with the shooting targets and go cart track at Ocean City.

Holy crap. Hello Neighbor. (Not necessarily, I was in Baltimore first then up in the Carroll highlands... (Highlands ha... /sarcasm)

I thougth no one else here knew what CB was.... tiny litttle town when we passed through. If memory serves the Calvert Cliffs isnt too far from there.

We too had a initiative to remake our town complete with street scapes and all. The people of Baltimore basically filled that valley up there in Carroll and brought all the crime and everything with them. No offense, I got the hell out. My childhood home is still there in Baltimore built approx 1922 or so. The one on milton is damaged and boarded up while Port street is completely and irrevocably filled with violence near patterson park. Its ridiculous.

After 25 years plus I don't think about the bs, I think about my money, when you can get a 3000 plus check per week, I only think about my wife and girls having a roof over there head, the rest I don't care about,

Patterson Park should just be classified as a demilitarized zone.

Used to party in Baltimore back in the early to mid 80's. A lot of underground clubs there that let you party till sun up so most of what ever you were on would be cleaned up by then. Had a lot of fun. Used to watch Reggie Jackson slam balls out of the park there.

The beach was a lot fun back in those days too. North Beach had their own police dept back then and they looked out for the locals. They would barracade off everything from Sherberts all the way down to the IGA and then flag us for 1/8 mi street racing. Used to keep a cooler full of beer strapped down in the trunk of my old Camaro. Town sherrif would come up and act like he was hassling me. "Whats in the cooler boy"? Just some piss water Coors Light sir. "That so"? Yes sir. "Trade ya a warm one for one of your cold."

Thats how it was back then.
