How do you know your getting fired?

The best line I ever heard some one tell a fellow by the name of Jeff Burns.

The boss lets him into the office and has him sit in a chair and says the following.
I have good news and not so good news for you.
The good news is you have the rest of the day off from work
The not so good news is we dont want you to return to work there after.......

 

If they want to fire me. Then that would be fine with me. I wouldn't worry about it. Always look out for yourself. No one else is going too.

 

They don’t laugh as loud at your jokes. The room goes silent when you walk in. They avoid eye contact with you. The miles dwindle down to nothing. They change the locks and ignition on your truck. They cut off your direct deposit and fuel cards.

Remember this saying: I was looking for a job when I found this one.

 

i was fired while sitting on the side of the road once, i was told another driver would be along shortly to pick me up

 

I've seen guys get the axe here. It really depends on the situation. One guy was at a red light, on a slight hill, dumped the clutch at 80k gross, and sent the driveline out from under the truck. He was picked up by the boss and driven home, and told don't bother coming back.

Another one, while he really didn't do any one thing wrong, he couldn't seem to do anything quite right. And he didn't get along with the boss too well. Their personalities were like oil and water. He was pretty much starved out of the job.

The best one was the poor sap that drive his truck off the side of a scale. The scale was above ground, and had nothing to keep you from falling off the side. It was pretty sketchy at best. He bent the tie rod, broke the steering box, blew a tire and screwed up a wheel in the process. What really upset the boss though was the phone call from said driver. Obviously upset, the driver called him and screamed at him for about five minutes about everything wrong in his life, and told the boss to screw off. He was fired over the phone, told to clean his truck out right where it was and find a ride home. (His house was only about five miles away though)

But really, I can't imagine there's any kind of industry standard for firing a non union truck driver. Different companies will handle it differently.

 

Why would there be a law requiring companies to inform an employee before firing them? There is no law saying you have to inform them before quitting, at least not that I've heard of.

Nope, but remember supposedly they want you to give them a 2 week notice if you are leaving.

Never understood that. Last job I left at end of day, wrote up resignation letter stating I quit, returned truck, company ID and all other issues equipment in satisfactory condition handed it to supervisor to sign and make a copy.

He stated "wow, this effective immediately, no notice!?!" I laughed and said "If I got fired would you give me a notice?"

 

How fickle are companies these days?
