At first I didnt understand why guys said theres a two tier either. I guess they see it that the new guys starting out under this contract will only ever be able to hit top rate for the length of the contract, while guys already at top rate will hit $30+ an hour during the course of the contract. And then when the next contract is up, the top pay rate can remain the same with less pay increases per year, meaning you'll then have drivers permanently making more then other drivers at the terminal.
How does UPS Freight keep drivers???

I do run that risk. At the worst, I figure what I'm learning now can set me up for a gig with a big time construction company thats union. I dont mean to hate on the guys that work at freight. I just dont see how the company can keep new drivers. Like I said in earlier posts, I guess it all comes down to your age and financial situation.

So I don't post much about specifics regarding my job on here, but you've admittedly gotten under my skin a little here. You're at under a year's experience, and you've just got the whole industry figured out.
My first year at UPS, I made $50k. Rough year. If not for my wife having an excellent job, I'd have struggled a lot.
My second year, I made roughly $57k. But as of 1 August, the old contract expired, and I got a raise I haven't seen on my check yet. I think we can safely assume I made $60k last year, once I get my retro check.
The new contract has addressed a lot of the low pay issues during the progression at UPS. New drivers will certainly have the chance to make over $50k their first year now. I think with my raise now in place, it's safe to say I'll wind up between $75-80k this year, at $24 per hour and 67 cpm. Decent. I'll be happy with that.
And in a year and a half, good lord. $37 an hour and 84 cpm.
Yeah, you're right. UPS IS terrible. I know Freight is different, but those guys also make BANK because they get mileage pay every single night.
Time will tell in your life. But at least for me? What I value in MY life? I think you blew it, friend.
You've got the industry figured out, so I won't waste more time yammering. But really take a moment to think about how much money you'd be making in 4 years. Set a reminder on your phone.

I was mistakenly under the impression you were really wanting to know the answer to the threads question. Maybe you will enjoy union construction because there is absolutely no bumps in the road there. Probably won’t miss a day of work the rest of your career.

That's what I don't understand about why this is even an argument. There are tons of jobs out there that pay around 50k for drivers with decades of experience. And that's where they top out. Many companies go years without giving raises, only doing so when they start bleeding drivers and hearing the complaints. I'm talking about most of the trucking industry here.
In fact, the last I heard median truck driver pay was less than 50k per year. It may be slightly better these days, I don't know. Half make more, half make less. Many in that median range are veteran drivers.
While I am sympathetic to the argument that the progression at UPS/UPSF is rough, there are tons of jobs whose top scale is no better than their 1st year pay.Mike2633, speedyk, SidewaysBentHalo and 2 others Thank this. -

Or who knows, maybe he is one of the Debbie Downers.
I'm willing to bet the same scenario went down the last company he just left, in which he worked for maybe 2 months. I don't think he worked for UPSF for more than 3 months.
But yeah, he has the whole industry figured out.
