Just practice. You'll have bad and good days out there. I've had many terrible real life backing situations. You gotta be patient and GOAL!!!!!! Before you know it you'll be sitting in your day cab practicing a long straight back with doubles.

I think offset backing and parallel parking are very similar...with both you are just moving over to the next lane....right?

Depending on where the power poles are located, either one could be hard, or easy.

I had half lane offset setup with a tanker trailer into a butter plant one day in St. Louis, with a fat round wood power pole on the blind side. Pole had a flat spot from everyone hitting it, so you knew you were going to get out and look a few times. There was an alley to pull up into to set up, but the the alley was offset about a half lane from the door way you had to get through.

In order to get out of the building, you had to pull out, jackknife the tractor, back up some to do the jackknife, in order to keep the trailer from hitting the doorway on the way out.

If I had not seen the prior driver do it, I would not have been able to get out of there!

Extremely hard, almost impossible to do unless you are just one of the "lucky" ones. I would quit right now if your school is doing offside backing next week, better to save face, rather than suffering the humiliation of public failure.

    Or not, ;;)

I've seen some of those rest areas where the space between the 2 sides (from left to right) to parallel park is barely wide enough for a single truck to drive by.... can't imagine how hard it is just to get out of there.

It isn't hard to offset. I'm currently learning it. Most common mistake people have is holding the wheel to long to break the trailer or get back under it. I find 90's a little harder to judge. Only been on the backing pad twice so far. Usually get both maneuver's with one or two pull ups.

I have a little backing experience under my belt from owning a Silverado and when growing up we use to move snowmobile trailers and other stuff using a garden tractor. So at least I had the concept of it in my mind of what to do.

Like desperado75 said if you think you know it all its time to hang it up. I pretripped this truck got loaded and 5 mins later lost the load 100 ft from the load yard. A Clevis pin failed. Was fired because of a improper pretrip inspection. Yeah my xray eyes missed the internal metal fatigue. Bottom line. No matter how long you've driven or how careful a driver is no one is perfect.

That's all it is? #### I do that most Monday mornings before my first cup off coffee and not paying attention to the dock I'm headed into.
