There a 33% increase in speed gong from 3G to 4G.
If you’re not watching videos or TV you can get by with 3G.

Do you know how much data you really need? If you’re not watching or uploading videos you may be better off getting a plain though Cricket (they are owned by AT&T) with one of their lower cost plains.

They use AT&T infrastructure so the coverage map at https://www.cricketwireless.com/ should give you an idea of how good of coverage you will get with ether AT&T or Cricket.

    I've had AT&T for almost 30 years.
They've been real good about taking care of me and my family.
I could probably save a little money going somewhere else, but I couldn't beat the customer service.
Tried the unlimited data once upon a time, but after a certain limit it would drop from 4glte to 4G then 3G.
Went back to a set data plan, now it never slows down.
For three phones, unlimited talk, text, 30 gigs of data, full insurance, 50 gigs cloud storage, 24/7 support, etc., and the list goes on I can't beat the price.

I use ATT internet. In terms of service up time, once a year Little Rock has to knock down the service on their fiber. and about the same time have a burned out server in the Richardson TX data center replaced which affected 8 states and took 15 hours plus to get it back. In terms of gaming and internet, data packet loss is 98 to 99% retained. With times as low as 30 ms to and from a North American host server.

I benefit from a major backbone fiber between Dallas and St Louis about 2 miles from where I am and less than from where my specific tie in building owned by ATT goes into it. Ive used it almost 20 years now. First dialup then upwards towards fiber. Fiber is to be installed in a few years. Essentially removing the last mile ethernet and neighborhood nodes and putting fiber to your computer room's wall.

I do not keep a land line anymore 2008 political stuff robo calling etc got out of hand so the land line was thrown out.

There is no point talking about how ATT works on a cell nationally. When we traveled we had Sprint and there was very little areas of the USA in which we could not really communicate. That was where qualcomm came in. And this was in 2000's long before G anything.

The last few years the major providers of communciations have been at war with one another. Trying to retain monthly post paid subscribers where they can. Lowest price wins. It will go on a while longer. I pay 12 dollars a month for my trac phone which has everything. But text is all I ever do. I push back against technology quite a bit the more they push 4G, 5G that is coming etc. and the constant advertising with the latest and greatest. It makes me sick. But it is what it is.

Let me expand on what someone has already replied. If you are checking out AT&T, you should investigate Cricket Wireless. Cricket is owned by AT&T and uses the AT&T prepaid network. They are the budget side of AT&T.
    .
If you are looking at Sprint, you should look at Sprint's wholely owned budget brand Boost Mobile.
.Likewise if you are looking at T-Mobile , you should also look at T-Mobile's wholely owned budget brand Metro PCS.
    .
And then there are Net10, Straight Talk, Trac Fone and probably others. They use the big 4 carriers [Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile] where applicable.
And finally, there are the pay-as-you-go options.
Research for the best price and coverage that works for you.

Are you currently using Cricket Wireless? How is the unlimited data plan?
    Is this true?
Cricket's unlimited data promotion seems like a good deal, until you read the fine print
