How is mileage calculated?

Hi Retired, I agree, and many times you'll see some 18 on some back road because they are trying to get back at the company by using a shortcut. On the other hand, hub miles has been under a lot of scrutiny, as drivers would go out of their way to rack up more miles. Why, I've even heard of drivers jacking up the drive wheel where the hub odometer was and letting the wheel spin for a while. Then carriers got wise and put them on the trailer, or did away with hub miles altogether.

 

Sad to say but most companies STILL haven't gotten away from the post office zip code mileage measurement. I update our mileage on my trip reports every time I send in my logs and manifests... Reported mileage vs Real or Actual mileage. Our company calculates shortest distance but they do not take into account that weather conditions can dramatically affect the route, scenic that it may be, you would prefer to take.

I make a habit of trying to save toll costs for the Company (this, in spite of the fact we have pre-pass) which might be a few extra miles but it assures me on time delivery and, being on the east coast, avoids the George Washington Bridge and driving through that New York City congestion whenever possible.

Loaded vs Unloaded (paid or unpaid) miles factor into everything. Most of us are paid by the mile although there are some that are hourly - I'm still in a holding pattern on which works better for me. I recently got remarried after a 30 year sabbatical after my first divorce and like to get home when I can. My Wife, fortunately, was an Airline Attendant so she understands my crazy travel schedule,... her's was far crazier.

Back to the mileage calculations. I bought a GPS but don't rely on it until it's proven itself on any new route. I still verify my routes and miles by Rand McNally and a laptop Street Atlas until the trip has been completed from the load point at least once. The GPS is right 99% of the time though so I'm gradually gaining some trust in it.

You have to remember HHG miles have been updated numerous times.

However,

it's still a ripoff for drivers.


Quite a few carriers in florida pay hub miles,

primarily the companies that do multi flower/plant stops.

 

There are 5,280 feet in a mile.
